Base Class: Ranger
Ranger Subclass- Revenant Conclave
Being left to die by a once trusted comrade, whether it be happenstance or a willful choice. Your soul is given guidance back to the physical plane through divine intervention to fulfil what you believe to be your purpose in the world. Be that to slay the man or beast who struck you down, guiding those who seek it through the harsh wilds so they may avoid such a grisly fate, or to simply lay waste to those you call your enemy. Rangers who find themselves under the unfortunate conclave of the revenant call upon both the physical and ethereal plane to strike down their foes with swift and exacting strikes.
A revenant will most likely not be fully aware that it had perished once before and may have simply assumed that it was merely a dream. And as such their understanding of their nature is hidden even to themselves until their minds have acclimated to the new life.
Sudden remembrance
Starting at level 3, your ranger gains the innate ability to cast the spell Hunter's Mark without concentration as many times up to their wisdom modifier per long rest
You acquire a sudden acute realization of your past trauma. This flood of emotion fuels a new burning desire to begin seeking recompense for the wrongdoings brought upon you. You gain a heightened attunement to one melee weapon of choice that does not have the heavy trait. This one weapon is bound to you and may be swung with either dexterity or strength. Additionally this one weapon gains the effects of the trait “Weapon Bond” as stated in the eldritch knight Fighter archetype listed in the player’s handbook on page 75.
Additionally you gain proficiency in the intimidation skill.
“I saw him last night. At first I didn’t believe it, but sure as hell, there he was. Standing in the rain outside the tavern i stayed in. His eye was shining like a star under that cloak. I’ve heard stories of his kind before. Momma had always said, ‘be kind to everyone or one day, one of these things might come for you’… I barely slept that night. Kept looking out the window. Hoping he hadn’t moved… around two in the morning, he wasn’t there. I left most of my things save for my coin, my cloak, and a shortsword… I need to travel light now. Can’t risk having him catch me. I’ll hire some guards in the next town over. That should buy me some time.”
Exacted Vengeance
starting at level 3,
At this time your ranger gains an additional instance of “favored enemy" or it's equivalent from the unearthed arcana in which you gain the benefits of said trait. Either of these two options must be directly tied to the cause of your characters original untimely demise.
Additionally, enemies afflicted by your rangers hunter’s mark who fall under one of your “favored enemy” categories are dealt one additional d6 force damage as your blade seems to duplicate mid swing and strike your opponent with a second ethereal afterimage (or a d4 if the target does not fall under the favored enemy trait) when dealt damage by your ranger.
“His blade never stopped. Like an endless tide, passing through the planes was a cleaving shade of his weapon. Quick as lightning but very much there. Almost as if he struck him twice with a single swing. And leaving a second slash across his chest every time… I sent those men to their graves. I can’t keep going forever, but I don’t have a choice other than to run. There’s no way in the nine I can hope to face him alone. Maybe numbers are how I need to handle this...”
Undying Resolve
Starting at level 7
This ranger gains the ability to regain small amounts of health upon successful killing blows to enemies affected by the hunter’s mark spell.
The health regained upon a successful kill is equal to 1d6 plus your ranger level.
This effect improves by 1 die type at both levels 11 and 15 (changing from a d6 to a d8 and once again to a d10)
“It didn’t matter how many times they wounded him. He’d just keep going. Body after body would fall to his blade. Blurring through the air all the while that one single eye would just continue to shine in my direction after every damn kill. He keeps getting closer and closer to me. I don’t know what I can do to keep him back forever.
I can feel my time running out with each passing day. I’m sorry my old friend…”
War March
Starting at 11th level
You gain the ability to teleport up 30ft to or away from a target affected by hunter’s mark as a bonus action. Your first attack out of this teleport is at advantage.
The range of this teleport increases to 45ft at level 15
“It’s been years now. I’ve sent so many men and women to their deaths just to try and keep me alive a little longer. Thugs have started hearing about the ghost that follows me. And as such, it’s become more and more expensive to continue to buy their services. I saw him again briefly about a month back. He attacked one of my businesses after the sun went down. Just, all of a sudden, there he was. In less than an instant, his blade just embedded in the chest of one of my thugs before i could even blink. As i was escaping out the back about 200ft away I saw his figure come around the corner and his one shining eye just stared me down from the distance. Hatred and anger burning inside of the crimson gem that was peering towards me.
This was the closest I had seen him in years. His blade shined with a flowing blue glow. The same color i first saw his eye… my life will be over soon… This I now know is a fact of my soon to be ended life.”
Ethereal Dance
Starting at level 15
Ater a successful melee kill on any target a revenant can teleport once per turn as a free action to a target afflicted with hunter’s mark and make one melee attack against the target.
“Tonight’s the night. I can hear my men’s bodies falling to his blade in my own home. I sit here in my office awaiting for my reaper to finally take me from this life to the next. The steps grow louder. His heavy leather boots slowly and methodically stomping through my halls. His shadow stops behind my door. Slowly, the handle turns and he enters my chambers. That same glowing blue blade gripped firmly in his hand. Under his hood, that crimson eye stares me down. I ask him for one small favor before he takes my life. And because you read this now tells you his answer. Here I sit, quietly at my desk. With the man who has hunted me for over ten years now standing more patiently than I feel any other man would. Awaiting for me to finalize my last entry into my journal. I have no more that I could say in this moment. I took his life and his trust. And he still grants me not final words, but a final account of this night. I will not give any names, as I've not done so throughout these long final years. And I know that when he strikes me down, he will disappear as swiftly as it was long for my death to occur. I’m sorry my old friend. May my death grant you peace.”
