Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

Dragon Knights are paladins that have Draconic Ancestry and serve a dragon, brood of dragons, or simply uphold the values of their dragonkin. They gain spells and abilities that are reminiscent of their draconic ancestry. An Oath of the Red Dragon Knight might hurl fireballs while commanding fire elementals or red dragon wyrmlings. Ultimately, the Dragon Knight will awaken their heritage and ascend, gaining the ability to polymorph into a bipedal hybrid dragon form.

To take the Oath of the Dragon Knight is to embrace the power and majesty of Dragons. What this means in practical terms can vary widely, particularly based on the type of dragon the paladin can trace its ancestry to. Gold Dragon Knights might serve to bring peace and justice to the land. Red Dragon Knights might desire the acquisition of territory and the subjugation of those who dwell there.

TENETS OF THE DRAGON KNIGHT

Power. Use your draconic power as a dragon of its type would.

Wealth. Acquire a great hoard of wealth.

Quest. Accomplish great deeds to grow your legend.

Fury. Rend, Sunder, and Obliterate those who stand against you.

Draconic Ancestry

You have draconic ancestry and must choose the type of dragon your ancestor is/was. This choice will grant damage resistance based on the damage type of the chosen dragon's breath weapon, additional hit points, and Darkvision of 60 feet. It will also affect your Channel Divinity, Oath Spells, Dragon Knight Ascension, and Dread Aspect features. Consult those features for details.

In addition, you can gain purely cosmetic changes of your choice to align your appearance with your dragon ancestor. If you are bipedal, you must remain bipedal. You cannot sprout wings or develop any new natural weapons. Examples might be draconic looking eyes, thin scales on your body, a draconic tongue, pointed teeth, etc. These changes occur when you take the oath, the magic of which awakens some of your draconic ancestry.

If you are a dragonborn or have other features that involve draconic ancestry, you must choose the same type of dragon ancestry here.

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.

Command of the Dragon. You can use Channel Divinity to bring a creature under your control, the type of which depends on your dragon ancestor (consult the table below). As an action, you can choose one creature that you can see within 30 feet of you. That creature must make a Charisma saving throw against your paladin spell save DC. If it succeeds, you can’t use this feature on it again. If it fails, it becomes friendly to you and obeys your commands until you use this feature again.

A creature whose challenge rating is equal to or greater than the paladin’s level is immune to this effect. Dragons brought under this effect can break the effect on a successful saving throw, made with advantage, if they are mistreated or otherwise made to act against their own interests or values.

DRAGON CREATURE TYPE
Black Black Dragons, Drakes, Elementals associated with Poison or Acid and Undead
Blue Blue Dragons, Drakes, Elementals associated with Air or Lightning
Brass Brass Dragons, Drakes, Elementals associated with Fire
Bronze Bronze Dragons, Drakes, Elementals associated with Air or Lightning
Copper Copper Dragons, Drakes, Elementals associated with Poison, Acid, Earth or Stone
Gold Gold Dragons, Drakes, Elementals associated with Fire and Celestials
Green Green Dragons, Drakes, Elementals associated with Poison, Acid, Earth or Stone
Red Red Dragons, Drakes, Elementals associated with Fire
Silver Silver Dragons, Drakes, Elementals associated with Cold or Water
White White Dragons, Drakes, Elementals associated with Cold or Water

Dragon Breath. You have draconic ancestry and can use your Channel Divinity ability to use a draconic breath weapon as an action. The damage type, area of effect, and saving throw are all determined by the draconic ancestry you have chosen. See the chart below.
DRAGON DAMAGE TYPE BREATH WEAPON
Black Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Blue Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Brass Fire 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Bronze Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Copper Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Gold Fire 15 ft. cone (Dex. save)
Green Poison 15 ft. cone (Con. save)
Red Fire 15 ft. cone (Dex. save)
Silver Cold 15 ft. cone (Con. save)
White Cold 15 ft. cone (Con. save)

When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. This damage increases by 1d6 every three levels of Paladin beyond third.

If you are a Dragonborn, this ability shares a cooldown with your racial breath weapon. However, you may roll an additional 2d6 damage plus an additional 1d6 damage for every six levels of paladin beyond third. Consult the chart below for damage.

PALADIN LEVEL BASE DAMAGE DRAGONBORN DAMAGE
3 2d6 4d6
6 3d6 5d6
9 4d6 7d6
12 5d6 8d6
15 6d6 10d6
18 7d6 11d6

Aura of Sundering

Starting at 7th level, all creatures of your choice within 10 feet of you are stripped of their resistance to your Channel Divinity breath weapon damage type. If the creature is immune to the damage type, they are made resistant. In addition, the paladin, as well as any creature summoned or controlled by the paladin and within 10 feet of the paladin, deal additional damage with weapon or natural weapon attacks equal to the paladin's charisma modifier. The extra damage is of the same type as your Channel Divinity breath weapon.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Draconic Ascension

At 15th level, the power of your oath awakens your draconic heritage, causing you to physically transform into a bipedal draconic hybrid. The magic of the transformation alters your gear to fit your new size and form. The changes are as follows:

  • Draconic Wings that grant a flight speed equal to your land movement speed
  • Thick Dragon Scales matching the color of your ancestor, granting damage resistance to nonmagical slashing, piercing, and bludgeoning damage.
  • Natural weapons that you may use in place of an attack when taking the Attack Action. The saving throws for these attacks are DC 8 + Proficiency + Strength.
    • Tail: 1d8 Bludgeoning damage. On a hit against a creature the same size or smaller, knock the target back 10 ft and make them prone on a failed Strength Saving throw.
    • Claw: 1d10 Slashing damage
    • Bite: 1d8 Piercing damage. On a hit you may attempt to grapple the target.

In addition, once per long rest you may use an action to increase your size, up to Huge, for a number of hours equal to your proficiency bonus.

  • Your base land and movement speed are increased to 60 feet.
  • If you are Large or Huge, you have advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws.
  • Large: Add 1d8 damage whenever you deal damage with a weapon or natural weapon. Increase your Channel Divinity Breath weapon range by 10 feet.
  • Huge: Add 1d10 damage whenever you deal damage with a weapon or natural weapon and add 5 feet to your reach and your Channel Divinity Breath weapon range by 20 feet.

Dread Aspect

Dread Aspect. The paladin can, as an action, surround themself with an aura of terror that lasts for 1 minute. Each creature of your choice that comes within 30 feet of you and is aware of you must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature that ends its turn beyond the range of the aura can make another saving throw to end the effect. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to it for the next 24 hours.

Frightened enemies that start their turn within range of your Aura of Sundering gain vulnerability to the damage type of your breath weapon and are struck by 4d10 damage of that type.

This ability can be used once per Long Rest.
