Base Class: Paladin
The oath of penance is taken by paladins who believe that punishment for their transgressions is the first step on the path for redemption.
Most paladins who swear by this oath have committed horrific sins in the name of their God by the will of a corrupted church, and that good acts will not be enough to atone. They may have formerly had an evil alignment. These paladins have begun to reform their ways, or have guilt that may simply be misplaced, directed within instead of placed where it should be.
To atone for their past sins these paladins now dedicate their lives to protecting the weak and being a shield to the people and fighting against the forces of darkness while they wander the wilds in search of forgiveness from the people and their God. These paladins have also become adept at healing magic as they wish to undo the pain, they have cause against the innocent.
Protector of the People
When you reach 3rd level you take this sacred oath and devote yourself to the protection of those who cannot protect themselves. You have thrown the restrictions aside of the Paladin and church order and will do whatever it takes to keep the peace and bring justice to the deserving.
Adept Healer
To atone for their past sins these paladins have become adept at healing and restoration magic as they wish to undo the pain, they have cause against the innocent. At leavel 3 they gain access to the cleric spell list.
Channel Divinity
When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.
Shield of Protection - Starting at 5th level, any attack made against an ally within 5ft of you can be redirected against you instead as a reaction if you have a shield in hand. The target must roll to hit your AC and any damage done is halved. Once you have used this feature you cannot use it again until you take a short rest. At 15th level the range of protection goes up to 10ft.
Sacred Weapon. As an action, you can imbue one weapon that you are holding with positive energy, using your Channel Divinity. For 1 minute, you add your Charisma modifier to attack rolls made with that weapon (with a minimum bonus of +1). The weapon also emits bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light 20 feet beyond that. If the weapon is not already magical, it becomes magical for the duration.
You can end this effect on your turn as part of any other action. If you are no longer holding or carrying this weapon, or if you fall unconscious, this effect ends.
