Wizard
Base Class: Wizard

While many wizards prefer to stand afar and avoid getting too close to the action, Mage Knights have a strong desire to get their hands dirty in a fight. Wizards of this tradition have learned how to use their magic to emulate the swords and armor used by traditional knights to allow them to get up in the face of their opponent, fighting right alongside their martial allies. Wizards of this tradition tend to be far more practically minded than traditional wizards.

Expanded Spell List

Your martial training has allowed you access to more specialized spells. The following spells are considered wizard spells for you: Armor of Agathys, Searing Smite, and Thunderous Smite.

Arcane Hilt

2nd-level Elemental Knight feature

Over the course of a long rest, you may remove the blade from a non-magical sword (shortsword, longsword, or greatsword) and enchant the hilt with ink or gemstones costing 5gp in material, creating an Arcane Hilt. This hilt can be used as an spellcasting focus for your wizard spells.

Additionally, as a bonus action, you may cause a blade made of pure elemental energy to erupt from the hilt. When you do so, choose acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage. While this blade is active, you gain the following benefits:

  • Your Arcane Hilt is considered to be a weapon of a weapon of the same type you created the hilt with (shortsword, longsword, or greatsword), however it deals damage of the type you chose instead of any other damage.
  • You are considered proficient with this weapon, and you may use your Intelligence modifier for attacks and damage with this weapon.
  • While you are wielding your Elemental Blade and aren't wearing armor, you cover yourself with abjuration magic, and your AC becomes 15 + your Dexterity modifier.

If you stop wielding your Arcane Hilt for any reason, the blade immediately dissipates. You may have any number of Arcane Hilts created, however you may only have the blade of one of them active at a time.

Depending on the type of weapon used to create the hilt, you gain a small benefit.

Greatsword

Your elemental blade doesn't have the heavy property.

Additionally, while wielding an elemental blade made out of a greatsword, you are able to take advantage of the weightlessness of your blade to create a size much larger than should be possible. During your turn, you may choose to add or remove the Reach property to an elemental blade constructed out of a Greatsword.

Longsword

If you are wielding an arcane hilt made from a Longsword in one hand, when you use your bonus action to summon it's elemental blade, you may create a magical barrier of force in your offhand that functions as a shield with which you are proficient. The barrier appears in the shape and color of your choice, though it is always clearly visible.

If you drop the shield, it dissipates into magic immediately. You may resummon the shield as a bonus action as long as your Element Blade is active.

Shortsword

While you are wielding an Arcane Hilt made from a shortsword and use your bonus action to make an attack with another weapon with Two-Weapon Fighting, you may use your Intelligence as the modifier for the attack and damage rolls (if you are able to add your modifier to your damage roll).

Elemental Affinity

2nd-level Elemental Knight feature

Whenever you deal acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage with a spell of 1st level or high as part of an action, you may charge your elemental blade with excess energy from your spell, and also change the damage type of your blade to match that type. If you deal damage with your blade while it is charged, you may expend the charge to deal an extra 1d4 damage per level of the spell you cast. The type of damage is the same type as your blade. You may only have one charge on your elemental blade active at a time, and your charge is lost after a minute, or if you deactivate your blade.

Extra Attack

6th-level Elemental Knight feature

You can attack with your Elemental Blade twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. Moreover, you can cast one of your cantrips in place of one of those attacks.

Arcane Fortification

10th-level Elemental Knight feature

While you may not have the physical resilience of your physical allies, you have learned to compensate for your fragility with magic.
