Base Class: Wizard
Utilizing ancient and primal forms of magic, a scholar of the ancient dragon magic is one who admires or even fears the raw power that the dragons once held. Many revered these scholars in the days after the revolt, but their numbers dwindled and they became more and more like legend as magic grew into the refined and wide-spread art that it currently is. Some still look up to the thought of these diligent scholars, but others see them as little more than aspiring tyrants, hoping to take the spot that the dragons once held.
Elemental Savant
Beginning at level two, your studies are similar to that of an evocation wizard, and the time and gold it takes to copy an evocation spell into your spellbook is halved.
Chromatic Disciple
Regardless of whether the scholar reveres or despises the chromatic dragons, one who chooses this path of study must maintain a level of respect for the raw power that these creatures hold. Beginning at 2nd level, choose an element: Fire, Cold, Acid, or Lightning; you gain an understanding of this damage type, and are able to detect when creatures are particularly weak or vulnerable to your specific element. Along with this, once per short rest you can use your connection with your respective element to spend a reaction allowing you to resist an attack of the same damage type, or give resist to an ally within 30 feet of you.
Metamorphosis
When a scholar of dragon magic reaches 8th level, they have become one with the element of their choice, adopting it as a part of them and making it a core area of power. It is at this point however, where many scholars begin to lose control of their own will and self-control. At 8th level you can follow one of two paths:
- Embrace the power of the draconic knowledge and search for further power and control of your domain. If this path is chosen, a scholar will begin to notice changes to their physiology if they are not already of draconic descent. There may be growths of scales at points on the body that correlate in color to the scholar's chosen element, their eyes may begin to glow and their pupils grow reptilian, they may find themselves coughing up smoke on occasion and smelling often of sulfur. If this begins, the scholar can choose either persuasion, intimidation, or deception and gain proficiency, (or expertise if already proficient) in this skill. When it comes to using this skill, they may use their intelligence modifier instead of their charisma modifier if they wish, drawing upon their connection with the dragons to master the art of manipulation.
- Reject the power of the draconic knowledge, and instead focus on strengthening their will. If this path is chosen, a scholar will find new self-worth and gain advantage on saving throws against being charmed or feared, and cannot be put to sleep magically, as well as gaining two more uses of the chromatic disciple resistance per short rest.
Flesh of Dragons
By 10th level, resisting their chosen element has become nearly second nature to a dragon scholar, and they gain permanent resistance to their chosen element. Regardless of whether the scholar rejected or embraced the draconic power, they can still use Chromatic Disciple to defend allies.
- Those who embraced the draconic power can now use a reaction to deal 1d6 damage of the chosen elemental type to any melee attacker, or attacker within 5 feet 3 times per short rest.
- Those who rejected the power can choose a different element from the three remaining and use it as the a second choice of damage resist type for Chromatic Disciple, granting allies resistance from whichever type is announced upon using the reaction. Along with this, once per long rest, the scholar may choose to make the resistance total invulnerability from one attack of the specified element.
Draconic Soul
By the 14th level, a scholar of the Draconic Magic is a master of primal elements, and has chosen their path, be it one of power and destruction, or one of protection.
- Once per long rest, when a scholar who sought power falls in battle, they will see a flash of color in the darkness surrounding them, and a voice commanding them to rise and ensure the destruction of their enemies will run through their head. Upon reaching zero hit-points and falling unconscious, there will be an explosion of elemental energy in a 20 foot radius centered around the unconscious scholar, dealing 6d6 elemental damage of their affiliated type to all creatures within the radius.
- Once per long rest, when a scholar who rejected the temptations of chromatic power falls in battle, they will see a quick gleam of metal in the darkness surrounding them, and a voice urging them to continue and stay alive will run through their head. Upon reaching zero hit-points and falling unconscious, a warm glow will fill the room, creating 20 feet of bright light and 20 feet of dim light, and every ally of the fallen scholar will receive temporary hit-points equal to the scholar's wizard level, plus their intelligence modifier.
Primal Weaving
By 6th level, a scholar of the dragon magic has a potent understanding of their affiliated element, and can weave it into any damage evocation spell once per turn, adding an extra 1d6 of the chosen damage type to the attack. If the attack is of the same element, the extra die is increased to a d8.
