Ranger
Base Class: Ranger

Dragoons are rangers who, for one reason or another, have made a pact with a dragon to gain its power. Originally all dragoons were dragon slayers, but over time many kinds of pacts were formed, resulting in dragon rangers who proceed with their lives as before, or dragon riders who stay by their pact dragon's side. Dragoons serving metallic dragons often have a strong sense of justice, while those serving chromatic dragons, while not necessarily evil, might not have the same priorities.

Dragon Pact

When you take this archetype at 3rd level, choose a color of dragon from the Pact Dragon table to represent your pact dragon. This choice affects features you gain from this archetype.

You carry around an accessory, such as a bracer or belt, created by your pact dragon that allows you to channel their power. If you lose your pact accessory, you can perform a 1-hour ceremony to receive a replacement from your pact dragon. This ceremony can be performed during a short or long rest, and it destroys the previous accessory. Should you die, your accessory is magically transported into the dragon's hoard.

Dragoon Form

Also at 3rd level, you learn to summon the essence of your pact dragon and channel it into armor and weapons.

As a bonus action, you transform into your Dragoon Form, and gain the following benefits for 1 minute:

  •  You magically transform your armor or clothing into a suit of Dragoon Armor. You gain a bonus to any Constitution saving throw you make to maintain your concentration on a spell while wearing your Dragoon Armor. The bonus equals your Wisdom modifier (minimum of +1).
  • You magically transform either one two-handed weapon, two one-handed weapons, or a one-handed weapon and a shield into Dragoon Weapons. Your Dragoon Weapons may deal your pact dragon's damage type instead of their normal damage type when you wield them. If you choose no weapons, you can choose to allow your unarmed strikes to deal slashing damage instead of their normal damage.
  • Your unarmed strikes may deal 1d4 + your Strength modifier in damage instead of their normal damage, and count as Dragoon Weapons. At 5th level, they instead deal 1d6 damage, and at 11th level, this increases to 1d8 damage. You receive this benefit whether or not you transform a weapon.

Your transformation ends after 1 minute. Your transformation ends early if you are incapacitated, or after you dismiss the transformation (no action required). You can transform into your Dragoon Form twice, after which you need to finish a short or long rest before you can transform again.

Items that transform with you still retain all of their properties, and you can choose between the old and new ones if there's a conflict when you attack.

Dragon Body

Starting at 7th level, your dragon’s energy changes you while you channel it. When you cast a ranger spell of 1st level or higher, and it requires concentration, you can choose one of the following effects to apply to yourself for the duration of the spell.

Dragon Heart. You have advantage on saving throws against being frightened.

Dragon Limbs. You gain an increase of 10 ft. to your base walking speed.

Dragon Scales. You gain resistance to your pact dragon’s damage type.

Dragon Senses. You gain Darkvision out to a range of 60 ft.

Dragoon Strike

Starting at 11th level, you can use your action to unleash your dragon's power while in your Dragoon Form. When you do so, you make a single weapon attack against a target with your Dragoon Weapon as normal. If it hits, you deal an additional 2d8 damage of your dragon's damage type with the attack to your target, and creatures other than yourself within 10 ft. of your target must succeed on a saving throw against your ranger spell save DC or take 2d8 damage of your dragon's damage type. If the attack is a critical hit, creatures that fail this saving throw take 4d8 damage instead.

The saving throw required by your Dragon Strike is listed on the Pact Dragon table.

Legendary Ranger

Starting at 15th level, your bond with the dragon is so strong that you gain a portion of its legendary power. When you fail a saving throw, you can use your reaction to roll an additional d20. On an 11 or higher, you succeed on the saving throw instead.
