Base Class: Artificer
Puppet Masters are a breed of artificer that seeks to make up for what they lack, whether that be the nimbleness to make elaborate machinations or jewelry, the sturdiness to build a mansion of epic proportions, or the strength to fell a Greatwood in a single swing. Marionettes aren't only good for day-to-day tasks, but can even be developed into more combat-oriented forms. On top of all of that, an artificer of this specialization usually understands how to make others act as a marionette would, be that willingly or forcefully.
Tool Proficiency
You gain proficiency with woodcarver’s tools. If you already have this proficiency, you gain proficiency with one other type of artisan’s tools of your choice.
Puppet Master Spells
You always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.
3rd: Charm Person, Command
5th: Barkskin, Suggestion
9th: Fast Friends, Speak With Dead
13th: Compulsion, Dominate Beast
17th: Awaken, Dominate Person
Puppet Creation
Starting at 3rd level, you can create a wooden T1 puppet over a course of 8 hours. When created, you can give it one command that it will strictly follow until it is destroyed or tethered (as seen in Marionette Masterpiece). These commands can be any of the following: Attack, Move, Run, or Dodge. You can craft higher tiers of puppets as you progress in this class, being able to craft a T2 puppet at 9th, and a T3 puppet at 15th. Each tier of puppet has it’s own cost that can total up to your current proficiency bonus. T1 has a cost of 1, T2 a cost of 3, and T3 a cost of 5.
In combat, your puppets go directly after you in initiative.
Your Puppets can equip other pieces of equipment, but they must be made of wood
When the spell mending is cast on a puppet, they regain 2d6 of their hitpoints.
Marionette Masterpiece
Starting at 3rd level, you can use a bonus action to send a number of tethers, equal to half your proficiency score (rounded down), towards allied creatures within 30ft of you that you can see. The tethers take up the use of one of your hands. When a tether is attached to an allied creature, you can cast touch spells through the tethers themselves. When a tether is attached to a puppet of your making, you can use your bonus action to let them have full access to their stat blocks for their next turn. Even though you must see a target to attach the tether, once it is attached, the target must simply stay within 30 ft of you. Each tether has an AC equal to your spellcasting DC, and an hp of 1. When a tether is severed be it willingly or forcefully, you can change the command of your affected puppets.
When knocked unconscious, all active tethers are dissolved.
Split Tether
Starting at 5th level, whenever you cast a non-concentration spell through your tethers, you can choose to split the effect of the spell between the affected creatures. Say you cast cure wounds through the tethers, each creature would get an equal portion of the healing, or with darkvision, the duration would be divided between the creatures, or end when the tethers are severed, whichever comes first.
Breakthrough (T2)
You can create wooden puppets up to T2 with your Puppet Creation ability.
Assisted Attack
Starting at 9th level, you can use the tethers of the Marionette Masterpiece ability against enemy creatures. You can only send one tether to each enemy a turn. When targeted by a tether, the target can make a Dexterity saving throw (DC is the same as your spellcasting DC) or be tethered. While tethered, the enemy can use an action to make an arcana check to be able to send spells back through your tethers. They can also attack these tethers as per usual.
Breakthrough (T3)
You can create wooden puppets up to T3 with your Puppet Creation ability.
Final Stand
Starting at 15th level, whenever a tethered puppet is reduced to 0 hp, you can unattune to one magical item to give them an amount of hp equal to half your level (rounded down) multiplied by the rarity of the item that was unattuned (common being 1 and artifact being 6). A puppet cannot exceed their maximum hitpoints in this manner.
