Barbarian
Base Class: Barbarian

The path of the Bittersweet is a difficult path to walk. For those who live in worlds of violence, it is strange to fight with a smile on one’s face. For those who live in worlds of peace, violence in any form is strange at all. However, the Bittersweet Path is a necessary aspect of any world. It is the path of those who protect those who cannot protect themselves, a path where Rage can be felt as righteous indignation against injustice and abuse. The few Bittersweets who dot the multiverse stand as paragons of protection, balancing softness and hardness for the sake of those who they hold dear, and ultimately for the greater good.

It is said that one of the first Bittersweets, whose name is lost to time, once fell in love with a powerful Queen that lived in a world which touched many others. The Bittersweet drenched themselves in blood and sweat for their Queen’s entertainment, as well as for the excitement of others. As the ultimate expression of their Path, their fights were always fun for all involved, and full of honor. It is said that any person who fought against that mythical Bittersweet would come away with a personal revelation about themselves. And for a time, all was well, as the Bittersweet inspired Queen and Country with their exploits.

But something happened, something which not even the oldest records of history seem to be able to state with continuous clarity. All that is known is that the first Bittersweet left the world of the Queen, and began to spread the Word of Sweet and Bitter across the worlds: So that dark worlds would be able to find the light, so that light worlds would grow the strength needed to keep the darkness at bay. No one knows where this traveler disappeared to in the end, but the Word of Sweet and Bitter echoes across all the multiverse by way of their disciples, some Barbarians, some not.

For just as salt brings out the flavors of sweets, so too do shadows enhance the lights in the sky.

You hail from a land where happiness is as present as air. Your blood is innocent, and your ancestry is peaceful. However, some are able to tap into the inherent sweetness of this ancestry and hone it into a power fit for battle. You operate in this strange duality, and your journey to the path of Sweetness is as irregular as it is irreverent.

Contradictory Rage

At level 3, your Rage becomes fueled by loving magic, and you become someone who mixes hatred with kindness. This is a contradiction that is very difficult to resolve from a moral level, as Startopia is vastly non-violent. Your rage gains the following properties.

  • Rage usually grants resistance to Bludgeoning, Slashing, and Piercing from Nonmagical Attacks. You also gain resistance with Radiant damage.
  • You become vulnerable to necrotic damage.
  • You gain disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws while Raging
  • Once per turn, at the beginning of your turn, you may name one creature on the battlefield who has hurt an ally, naming the creature and the ally they hurt. That creature takes an extra 1d6 damage for every attack of yours that hits.

Brave Sparkles

At 6th level, You are able to provide aspects of your Rage to others, as you become primed to help your friends. As an action, you may touch a willing creature to grant them the following:

  • The creature chooses if they gain advantage on strength checks or resistance to one of the following types of damage: [Tooltip Not Found], [Tooltip Not Found], or [Tooltip Not Found].
  • If the creature is Frightened, their fright is dispelled. Perform a contested Arcana check if the source of the Fear is particularly potent.

You may use this feature as per your proficiency bonus per day.

Anti-Bully Safety Zone

At 10th level, you realize you can channel the energy of the Happy Sun, the Rainbow Stars, and the Prism Moon of Startopia into your body. As an action, once per long rest, you may exude an aura of joy and safety that extends 30 feet from you. This aura has the following effects:

  • All creatures within the aura are affected by the Calm Emotions spell. If anyone attacks anyone else within the Safety Zone, they take 1d6 + CHA radiant damage as a spectral hand smacks them behind the head.
  • As an action, you can focus the light into one specific creature. You can cast the Remove Curse spell this way. If the DM wishes, perform a contested Arcana check against the curse. Whether this curse removal succeeds or fails, the Anti-Bully Safety Zone is dispelled.

Magical Girl Transformation

You have, in your own brutish, weird, punchy way, reached the pinnacle of the Sweetness that lies inside of you. You have found the balance between Sweetness and Bitterness that drives people to fight under the banner of Love.

You gain the following conditions at 14th level; When you Rage, you undergo a transformation sequence akin to that of a magical girl:

  • You no longer have vulnerability against necrotic damage, nor disadvantage on Wisdom saves while raging.
  • While Raging, you may add your charisma modifier to your AC.
  • While Raging, you have advantage on any Persuasion or Performance rolls that you make.
