Base Class: Paladin

Blackguards are paladins who broke their sacred oaths and now indulge their own villainous ambitions. They consort with Fiends and Undead, and they reject many of the goodly things from their former lives.

Blackguards often adorn their armor and weapons with dread accoutrements or are marked by eerie phenomena. You may choose a blackguard’s accoutrement or roll on the Blackguard Accoutrements table to determine it.

 

Channel Divinity

When you take this option to break your oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.

Dreadful Aspect. As an action, you can make it so each enemy within 30 feet of you must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, it is frightened of you for 1 minute. If a frightened target ends its turn more than 30 feet away from you, the target can repeat the saving throw, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Smite. As a reaction, immediately after you hit a target with an attack roll, you can force that target to make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, the target suffers one of the following effects of your choice:

Blind. The target is blinded for 1 minute. The blinded target can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Shove. The target is pushed up to 10 feet away and knocked prone.

Aura of Broken Oaths

Starting at 7th level, all creatures within 10 feet of you become undead that follow your commands after they die. They then fall back into a corpse after 1 minute.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Impurity of Spirit

Beginning and 15th level, you are able to talk to the undead. By doing so, you are also able to reason with them.

Unholy Nimbus

At 20th level, as an action, you can emanate an blob of shadow. For 1 minute, dark shadow reaches out from you in a 30-foot radius, and mild shadow is 30 feet beyond that.

Whenever an enemy creature starts its turn in the dark shadow, the creature takes 10 necrotic damage.

In addition, for the duration, you have advantage on saving throws against spells cast by celestials or feys.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
