Fighter
Base Class: Fighter

Legionnaires are fighters trained to turn individual combatants into disciplined fighting units. Through drill, positioning, and battlefield commands, they coordinate those around them into formations capable of advancing, attacking, and weathering assaults as one.

Although many Legionnaires learn their craft in armies, mercenary companies, or military orders, the same discipline can be applied to an adventuring party. A Legionnaire does not require an army to fight effectively, but the more willing their companions are to maintain formation, the more efficiently the entire group can operate.

Level 3: Legionnaire Training

You can train willing creatures to fight as Recruits. Training a creature requires 10 minutes of practice with it.

You can have up to two Recruits at a time. This number increases to four at 5th level, six at 11th level, and eight at 17th level. If you train a creature beyond this limit, you choose one of your existing Recruits that loses this status.

Level 3: Battle Formation

You can organize yourself and Recruits into a battle formation.

Participants in your formation are you and any Recruits within 5 feet of you or another Recruit participating in the formation. While in Battle Formation, participants are given the following effect based on the number of participating Recruits.

Coordination. The participant gains a +1 bonus to AC and the first time they hit with an attack roll on their turn, the attack deals 2 additional damage. The damage’s type is the same as the originating damage.

0 Recruits. You have Coordination.

1 Recruit. You and the Recruit each have Coordination.

2 or More Recruits. Only Recruits have Coordination.

A Recruit ceases to have Coordination whenever it no longer satisfies the requirements to participate in the formation.

Level 3: Legion

Any other creature with the Legionnaire Martial Archetype automatically counts as your Recruit and doesn’t count against your maximum number of Recruits.

A Recruit can participate in only one Legionnaire’s formation at a time. If it could participate in more than one, it chooses which formation it joins.

If two or more Legionnaires participate in one another’s Battle Formations, each of those Legionnaires benefits from Coordination twice instead of once.

Level 7: Lock Step

Your training allows a formation to maneuver as a single unit.

While in Battle Formation, a participant can move the formation on that participant’s turn, as determined by the number of participating Recruits. When it does so, it moves each other participant the same distance. This movement can’t move a participant whose Speed is 0 or move a participant in a manner it couldn’t normally move. If the formation can’t maintain its required positioning, it must either stop moving or break formation.

0 Recruits. Your Speed increases by 10 feet.

1 Recruit. For every 1 foot the formation moves, the participant must spend 2 feet of movement.

2 or More Recruits. For every 1 foot the formation moves, the participant must spend 3 feet of movement.

Level 10: Battlefield Orders

You can sacrifice your own attacks to direct the efforts of your formation.

Whenever you take the Attack action, you can replace any number of your attacks with one of the following orders for each attack replaced.

Attack Order. Choose one creature you can see within 60 feet of you. Until the start of your next turn, its AC is reduced by 1 against attacks made by participants. A creature cannot be affected by more than one Attack Order at a time.

Defend Order. You direct your formation to brace against the coming assault. Each participant gains temporary hit points equal to 5 times the number of Defend Orders you issue. These temporary hit points last until the start of your next turn or the participant leaves the formation.

Level 15: Formation Mastery

Your formation fighting has reached a level of practiced precision.

The AC bonus from Coordination increases to +2, and the additional damage increases to 4.

Level 18: Command Mastery

Your battlefield commands become exceptionally precise.

Your Battlefield Orders improve in the following ways:

Attack Order. The target's AC is reduced by 2 instead of 1.

Defend Order. When calculating the temporary hit points granted by your Defend Orders, use 10 instead of 5.
