Monk
Base Class: Monk

A fire to fight a fire...

A thief to catch a thief...

A beast to kill a beast...

Monks who follow the way of the blue mage, know that the best weapon is to learn the ways of your enemy and to turn their own power against them. Blue mages absorb the abilities of their opponents and can use them against other targets in the future.

Ostensibly, the Blue Mage is a monk who does not posses inherent magic, but rather possesses the ability to absorb magic cast upon her, either by monsters with abilities or simply other casters. On one hand, a Blue Mage can learn any spell or ability he is affected by. On the other hand, he is unable to learn spells that target self-only, because they can never be cast on him. Additionally, powerful spells like disintegrate are more likely to simply leave him dead, rather than let him learn them.

Blue Magic

Once you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you can use your Ki to absorb and permanently learn and use spells and monster abilities. Whenever you are targeted by an spell, or creature ability, you may spend one Ki and attempt to learn it. The Ki point is spent at the time the blue mage is subject to the action and must make a Concentration saving throw DC= (8 + 1/2 the damage of the attack) or if the action causes no damage the DC = 8 + the proficiency bonus of the creature.

The Blue mage may then use the ability by spending Ki points. A spell costs a number of Ki points equal to its spell slot level times 1.5 rounded up. A monster ability may be used by expending 1 Ki point for every CR Creature has you then minus an amount equal to your proficiency bonus + CON mod divided by 2. the attack bonus for these abilities is equal to your wisdom modifier + proficiency bonus, if the ability or spell has a saving throw then the DC is equal to (8 + your Wisdom Mod + your Proficiency bonus )

A blue mage may know as many spells and monster abilities equal to their level + their constitution modifier, If learning new ability or spell would cause you to exceed this maximum, you may choose an ability or spell you know and replace it with the new one.

The warrior mages

Blue mages are trained to familiarity with most simple weapons however most employ a signature weapon which they've trained with for longer, commonly employing scimitars and Kopesh swords in combat as their signature weapons. at 3rd level gain proficiency with their chosen weapon without the heavy property, Their chosen weapon counts as a monk weapon when wielded by them.

Azure Consumption

At 6th level, you gain the ability of Azure Consumption. The Blue Mage can attempt to learn passive or defensive abilities from creatures by eating them. They must succeed on a (DC 10 + monster CR) Constitution saving throw after consuming a corpse to learn the ability. Otherwise they are sick and vomit up the corpse which is ruined. A portion of the corpse (Heart, Brain etc.) must be consumed and this takes 10 minutes. this ability is more about symbolism than anything and a bluemage can flavour the process as anything such as absorbing the soul from the corpse.
Each of these passive abilities counts against the total number of abilities the Blue Mage can learn. Each passive ability 1 ki point to maintain, reducing the available ki points by that amount. These abilities are always 'on' and cannot be turned off to regain access to the reserved ki points.
When the blue mage gains a new ability when they are at the limit of abilities they can learn, the blue mage may choose to replace another ability with the gained ability or forfeit the new ability.
Their form changes to reflect the abilities learned. If they gain the +4 natural bonus to armor of the Galeb Duhr, then their skin takes on a rocky appearance.

Blue Weaving

At 11th level, the blue mage  can begin weaving their magics into combat. When the blue mage takes the attack action if may replace one of it's attacks with a single action monster attack that it knows. Additionally the blue mage may exchange it's unarmed or monk weapon damage type with one from it's monstrous abilities.

Blue Magic Mastery

At 17th level the blue mage has reached a point where it has become indistinguishable from the monsters they imitate. The blue mage's creature type changes from humanoid to monstrosity (shapeshifter) and cannot be polymorphed or otherwise shapechanged unless it chooses to do so. additionally gaining the following benefits.

  • The blue mage no longer has a limit to the amount of abilities they can have at any given time
  • Passive abilities no longer require KI points to maintain
  • The blue mage no longer ages and doesn't require any form of sustenance (Food, water, air etc.)
