Tenets of Retribution

The tenets of the Oath of Retribution vary by paladin, but most revolve around the extermination of wrongdoers by any means necessary. The core principles of the tenets are brutal in their simplicity.

No Mercy. My sworn foes, those beyond the reach of reason or redemption, deserve neither mercy nor quarter. I will grant them none.

Whatever It Takes. My qualms can't get in the way of eliminating my foes. If I must stain my honor in the pursuit of an enemy, so be it.

Restitution. If my foes wreak ruin on the world, it is because I failed to stop them. I must help those harmed by their misdeeds however I can.

Wisdom. Not all who oppose me are evil. Incautious actions can make enemies of those who might otherwise be allies. I will do as much good as possible while causing the least amount of harm.

Loyalty. I am an extension of my Lord's divine will. I will serve Him faithfully, even unto death.

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.

Vow of Enmity. As a bonus action, you can use your Channel Divinity to utter a vow of enmity against a creature you can see within 30 feet of you. You gain advantage on attack rolls against the creature for 1 minute or until it is killed.

Wrath of the Righteous. As an action, you can use your Channel Divinity to emanate a terrifying premonition of promised vengeance. You force each creature of your choice that you can see within 30 feet of you to make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature becomes frightened of you for 1 minute. As an action, a creature can make a Wisdom check against your spell save DC to steel its resolve and end the effect on itself.

Wrathful Strikes

Starting at 7th level, your attacks become empowered by the strength of your resolve, allowing you to strike at your sworn foes with unerring accuracy.

You gain a bonus to melee attack rolls equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of +1). Additionally, your weapon attacks made against frightened enemies and enemies under the effects of your Vow of Enmity score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20.

At 18th level, your weapon attacks made against frightened enemies and enemies under the effects of your Vow of Enmity score a critical hit on a roll of 18-20.

Relentless Seraph

Starting at 15th level, you can use a bonus action to manifest a pair of angelic wings from your back. While the wings are present, you have a flying speed of 45 feet. The wings last until you're incapacitated, you die, or you dismiss them as a bonus action.

Additionally, your unfailing resolve grants you greater resilience while fighting your sworn enemies. While your Vow of Enmity is active, if you are reduced to 0 hit points and not killed outright, you can make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw. If you succeed, you instead drop to 1 hit point.

Each time you use this feature after the first, the DC increases by 5. When you finish a short or long rest, the DC resets to 10.

Implacable Retributor

At 20th level, you gain the ability to embody divine justice. Using your action, you can magically become an avatar of Retribution, gaining the following benefits for 1 minute:

  • Your eyes burn with the Celestial light of judgment. For the duration, you have Truesight to a range of 120 feet, and bright light shines from you in a 120-foot cone, which follows your gaze. This light is sunlight.
  • You have resistance to all damage.
  • When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can make one additional attack as part of that action.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.
