Base Class: Wizard
The Arcane Tradition of Spellforging is an art of altering seemingly mundane items to store magical effects to be channeled from. Stories of this applied art range from shocked adventurers telling of a horrendously rigged fortress where magical spells would go off at unpredictable moments, to a young noble recounting a magical bauble they were given by a wizard to use in a time of dire need, or stories of a wandering spellcaster that appeared to a village haunted by a fiend and sealed it away with a single trinket.
The stories all involving a seemingly useless item where magic suddenly surged free from are from the works of Spellforgers. The wizards come from all parts of Toril with many appearances and methods and tools that are used to implement spellforging ranging from carved figures, vials of liquid, scribed bones, slips of paper, or even a scroll of text. Whatever is used for spellforging, it commonly reflects the background and traditions of the Spellforger.
Spellcasting Tradition
Starting at the 2nd level, you've learned the staples of spellforging of study and practice. Across many territories the common connection spellforging has with other practitioners are understanding the deeper studies of where their spellforging traditions come from and the mastery of Mage Hand, a spell that is used as the source of delivery for a handful of the spellcaster's trade.
You gain the cantrip Mage Hand and it doesn't count against the number of cantrips you know.
You can command Mage Hand as a bonus action and it can be used to activate spellforged items, potions, and scrolls.
You also gain proficiency in a tool related to your Spellforging technique with things like Alchemist's Supplies, Calligrapher's Supplies, Tinker's tools, Cobbler's tools, Jeweler's tools, Woodcarver's tools, etc.
Spellforged Token
You can cast any of your prepared spells or cantrips into a Spellforged Token to use at a later time. You can create a number of Spellforged Tokens equal to your Proficiency Bonus+Intelligence Modifier. Spells cast onto a Spellforged Token can grant the spell one of the following qualities on the targets affected by the spell:
- +1 to the spell Damage or Healing result
- +1 Increase to the Save DC against the spell
- +1 to Hit with the spell attack
- Gain 1+(Spell Level) Temporary Hit Points
These increase to +2 at 5th level, +3 at 9th level, +4 at 13th level, and +5 at 17th level.
Spells that create creatures only allow one creature to gain Temp HP. When you cast a spell with the range of touch, the Spellforged Token can deliver the spell as if it had cast it. Once a spell is cast from a Spellforged Token, the token is destroyed and any materials required for the spell are consumed as well.
During a short rest, you can make a check with the selected Spellforge Tool Proficiency you chose to regain a number of Spellforged Token uses equal to your check result divided by 5 (rounded down, minimum of one). Any unused Spellforged Tokens lose their spell properties at the next long rest, but consumed components are not lost from this.
Spell Storing Bauble
At the 6th level, you're able to use the spellforging technique to create a spell storing bauble that be held by anyone and activated by them as if it was the original caster.
Any creature can cast a spell up to the 5th level into this item and whoever holds the bauble can cast the stored spell from it using the spell level, spell save DC, spell Attack bonus, and Spellcasting ability of the original caster, but the bauble is destroyed once the spell is cast from it.
If you cast one of your spells into the Spell Storing Bauble then the stored spell gains one of the bonuses from your Spellforged Tokens.
The item lasts until a new spell is cast into it to replace the older spell, or until the bauble is used. However, you can only have one of these created at a time, and it can only be created during a Rest.
Arcane Trigger
At the 10th level, you're able to expand the capabilities of your Spellforging Tokens by creating specific conditions for the forged spells to be ready to activate once the specific conditions are met to quickly cast the spells.
You can create a Spellforged Token and bind it to a specific target or location with a condition that can trigger the spell (like use Shocking Grasp when a creature hits the target, or something as specific as Thunderwave being triggered when the target is grappled). Once the condition for the trigger happens, you can use a reaction to cast the spell, but all other limitations of spellcasting, like concentration, still apply.
You can create a number of Arcane Triggers for your Spellforged Tokens equal to your Intelligence Modifier. You regain all expended uses of it when you finish a long rest. Any unused Arcane Triggers lose their spell properties at the next long rest, but consumed components are not lost from this.
Ancient Manifestation
At the 14th level, you learn how to tap into the secrets of magic from schools of magic normally outside of your reach of study. While it isn't as easy to wield these spells, you're are able to contain and unleash these spells by a forging practice called an Ancient Manifestation.
One of your Spellforged Token slots can be used to forge an Ancient Manifestations. With an Ancient Manifestation, you can pick spells from any class for the Spellforged Token slot, but the spell requires a spell slot higher than their normal level to cast and still require any materials needed. For example you could cast Revivify into a Spellforged Token, but it would use a 4th level spell slot and still consume diamonds worth 300gp.
Ancient Manifestations still gain the same Spellforged Token bonus and potentially gains an additional effects by making a check with your Spellforged Tool Proficiency to gain any of the following traits for the results of the check divided by 10 (rounded down). For casting spells that creates creatures, only one creature gains an additional trait that can apply. Adding additional effects for the Ancient Manifestation is optional; you can select an effect multiple times:
- When you roll Damage or Healing for the spell effect, you can reroll any one dice result of 1 or 2
- A target makes their saving throw at disadvantage against the spell
- Roll to hit with advantage with the spell attack
- A target gains resistance to any one type of damage till the end of their next turn (this can be selected multiple times)
While these spells can only be used as Spellforged Tokens, during a short rest when you recover Spellforged Tokens with your Spellforging Tool Proficiency, you can recover one of these Ancient Manifestations spending the appropriate spell slot and token to create it.
