Fighter
Base Class: Fighter

Heavy escorts are trained to understand combat just as well as they are trained to understand people and their adversaries. Their ability to foresee potential attacks that could harm their allies is nearly unmatched. Heavy escorts are always on the lookout for things that don't seem quite right and are quick to act to protect those under their responsibility. Groups that have a heavy escort with them are usually much more calm, knowing that they are under watchful eye and a calm mind that can think clearly in the most dire circumstances.

Watchful Guardian

You are skilled at watching over those you feel need your protection and you have the ability to foresee potential attacks and step in to prevent them or help your comrades when necessary.

Starting at the 3rd level, as an action you may select a creature within 15 feet of you to become your Protected Target until the target moves or is moved more than 15 feet away from you or your concentration is broken, using the concentration guidelines as if you had cast a spell (see PHB). As long as this ability is active you may take any of the following reactions.

  • Keep A Distance: When a hostile target gets within 5 ft of your protected target you may use your reaction to move up to 15 feet and then attempt to push a large or smaller creature  up to 10 feet. To determine if the target is pushed both creatures roll an athletics check and if yours is higher then the target is pushed.  You may select the hostile creature or your protected target who may willfully fail the saving throw for this test.
  • Human Shield: When your protected target is declared the target of a ranged attack that targets only that creature you may move up to 15 feet. If you end your turn between the creature declaring the attack and your protected target then you become the target of the attack. This attack gains advantage and if you are required to roll a dexterity saving throw you do so with disadvantage.
  • Emergency Protocol: If your protected target falls unconscious you may use your reaction to move up to 15 feet towards the creature and then attempt a medicine check to stabilize them. Alternatively if the target is put to sleep you may use your action to wake them up.

Urgent Decisiveness

You know that sometimes the most important moment to act is when you least expect it. You have trained yourself to hold back until just the right moment.

Starting at the 3rd level, immediately after taking a reaction you may use your action surge to take an action out of turn. If you have multiple action surges remaining you may only use this ability once per round.

Calming Presence

Your presence and focus to protect those around you can give them boosted confidence and courage in battle.

Starting at the 7th level, as long as your watchful guardian ability is active your protected target gains a +1 bonus to AC and is unaffected by the frightened condition. At level 15 this amount changes to a +2 bonus to AC.

Focused Breathing

You have trained your self to slow your breathing to keep your body calm in dangerous situations in order to maintain your focus and push it to resist the elements.

Starting at the 10th level, you may use a bonus action to calm your breathing in the heat of battle. Until the start of your next turn you gain advantage on Constitution saving throws.

Exploit the Moment

You have learned to take advantage of unexpected moments when enemies briefly let down their guard.

Starting at the 15th level, when you use your urgent decisiveness your action is enhanced as follows:

  • Attack: When you make a weapon attack your attacks gain advantage.
  • Dodge: Until the start of your next turn, the next time you would be targeted by an attack the attack automatically misses.
  • Ability Check: If you use your action and an ability check is required you gain advantage on that check.
  • Dash: You may move double your move speed.
  • Help: In addition to gaining advantage on their next attack the chosen ally gains 10  temporary hit points.

Balanced Focus

You have learned to focus your mind in two places at once allowing you to protect multiple targets at the same time.

Starting at the 18th level, when you activate your watchful guardian ability you may select two creatures to become your protected targets. Both targets gain the benefit of your calming presence and you may use your reaction to intervene for either one of them. If at any point one of the protected targets is no longer within 15 feet of you then they are no longer a protected target unless you activate the watchful guardian ability again. If you lose your concentration on the watchful guardian ability then both of the targets are no longer considered protected targets.
