Warlock
Base Class: Warlock

You have made a pact with a powerful entity; a character from folklore, made real by the power of their story being told. These beings are fueled by the legends they inhabit, and can never die until their stories do. Warlocks of the Storybook strive for adventures that will let them reach the same exalted status. From their perch on a spinning plane of tales, your Storybook patron flips through the pages of your life, granting abilities to enhance the legend you will leave behind.

Character Archetype

The plot of your patron's story is modeled after one of the following Character Archetypes: the Chosen One, the Humbled King, or the People's Hero.

The Chosen One

Your patron is a character of unassuming beginnings, plucked out of obscurity by prophecy to go on a quest of great importance to their realm.

The Humbled King

Your patron's tale is one of hubris; they were once arrogant and powerful, but learned their lesson after being brought low by a monumental task.

The People's Hero

Your patron never wanted to save the world, just one small corner of it. Their tale revolves around their good deeds for their community.

Expanded Spell List

1st-level Storybook feature

Your fairytale patron grants you access to an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The Storybook Expanded Spells table shows the spells that are added to the warlock spell list for you, along with the spells associated in the table with your patron’s Archetype: the Chosen One, the Humbled King, or the People's Hero.

Turn the Page

1st-level Storybook feature

Also at first level, your patron can allow you a rare glimpse at the next page in your story. You gain one of the following reactions, based on your patron's Archetype:

The Chosen One. When you are hit with an attack, you can roll to increase your AC by 1d4, potentially turning the hit into a miss.

The Humbled King. When an enemy you can see succeeds on an attack roll or ability check, you can subtract 1d4 from the roll, potentially turning the success into a failure.

The People's Hero. When an ally you can see fails an attack or ability check, you can add 1d4 to the roll, potentially turning the failure into a success.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Call to Adventure

6th-level Storybook feature

At 6th level, your patron's story has taught you to inspire others to cross the threshold of adventure. You and your allies within 30 feet of you can gain a bonus to initiative rolls equal to your Charisma modifier.

Seizing the Sword

10th-level Storybook feature

At 10th level, your patron deems it necessary for your heroic arc to receive a reward. You can learn two spells (up to 5th level) from another class list as determined by your patron's Archetype.

  • The Chosen One: Wizard
  • The Humbled King: Bard
  • The People's Hero: Druid

These spells count as Warlock spells for you, and they don't count against your maximum number of spells known. You can cast each without using a spell slot one time per long rest. In addition, whenever you reach a Warlock level that grants the Mystic Arcanum feature, you can swap out a spell from this feature for another from the same class, up to the spell level of your Mystic Arcanum.

Apotheosis

14th-level Storybook feature

At 14th level, your patron bestows upon you the power to push through even the most supreme ordeals. If you are reduced zero hit points, you can, as a reaction, choose instead to stay up with one hit point. Additionally, one of the of the following effects occurs based on your patron's archetype:

Archetype Effect
The Chosen One At the start of your next turn, your eyes begin to blaze with white-hot light as the power of prophecy sustains you. For the next minute, your AC increases by your spellcasting ability modifier, and attacks you make deal an extra 2d12 radiant damage.
The Humbled King At the start of your next turn, the ground around you tremors with impending consequence. Up to 7 creatures you choose must make a Wisdom save against your spellcasting DC; for the next minute, whenever a creature who failed the save makes an attack roll or saving throw, they must roll a d4 and subtract that from their roll (as if you had cast a 5th-level Bane spell without needing to concentrate, use an action, or expend a spell slot).
The People's Hero At the start of your next turn, the area around you fills with protective and comforting energy. You and your allies within 30 feet of you regain 2d12 HP, and for the next minute, all healing spells cast on or by allies within that range do maximum healing.

Once you have used this reaction, you cannot use it again until you have completed a long rest.
