Base Class: Monk
Heavenly masters use their wisdom and their control of ki to temporarily transform themselves into celestial beings, blurring the line between body and soul, between mortal and immortal. Some monks walk this path under the guidance or tenets of a deity, attempting to emulate their divine teacher's ways in the hopes of one day ascending to serve alongside them in the Upper Planes. Others view their study as a means of reaching enlightenment, seeking to transcend their earthly needs and desires by surpassing their mortal form.
Whatever their reasons, a heavenly master devotes themselves to the study of ki more than any other monastic tradition, forming a powerful bond between the energy of their body and the power of their soul.
Celestial Form
Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you can temporarily merge your body and soul to become a heavenly being. As an action, you can expend 3 ki points to assume one of three celestial forms:
Form of the Inferno: Your body becomes wreathed in harsh sunlight or crimson hellfire, shedding bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for an additional 10 feet. While in this form, you may use your Flurry of Blows feature without expending a ki point.
Form of the River: Your body shimmers like light over running water and your movements become supernaturally fluid and graceful. While in this form, you may use your Patient Defense and Deflect Missiles features without expending ki points.
Form of the Wind: Your hair and clothes flutter and buffet about, as if being tugged upon by powerful winds. While in this form, you may use your Step of the Wind feature without expending a ki point.
Each of these forms lasts for 1 minute. To maintain your form, you must concentrate on it as you would on a spell. If you lose concentration, the form ends. Casting a concentration spell causes you to lose concentration on your current form. Additionally, your form ends early if you dismiss it (no action required), are incapacitated, die, or use this feature again.
Stance of the World
At 6th level, your union with your soul becomes more difficult to break. When you fail a constitution saving throw to maintain concentration on your celestial form, you may use your reaction to spend 3 ki points to turn that failure into a success. Doing so restores the form's remaining duration to 1 minute.
Heavenly Disciple
At 11th level, the abilities of your Celestial Forms improve.
- While in your Form of the Inferno, your unarmed strikes and attacks with monk weapons deal radiant damage instead of the attack's normal damage type.
- When you enter your Form of the River, you may cast the spell Mirror Image as part of that action with Wisdom as your spellcasting modifier. The spell ends if your form ends.
- While in your Form of the Wind, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed and can hover.
Celestial Ascension
At 17th level, your mastery over body and soul is perfected, allowing you to unlock the full potential of your forms. When you use your action to assume a Celestial Form, you may choose to spend 6 ki points instead of 3, and assume two of the forms simultaneously. You may also use your action while already in a form to spend 3 ki points and assume a second form, extending the duration of each to 1 minute. You concentrate on both forms as if they were one form, and you may end either or both forms early (no action required.) When you use your Stance of the World feature while two forms are active, both forms remain active.
Additionally, each of your forms gain additional features:
- Guiding Light: Your Form of the Inferno now sheds bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet. When you enter your Form of the Inferno, you may choose a number of creatures within 30 feet of you up to your wisdom modifier. Each creature chosen in this way gains a Guiding Light die, equal to your Martial Arts die. Once while your form remains active, each creature can roll their die and add the number rolled to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw it makes.
- Preserving Tide: When a creature within 5 feet of you while you are in your Form of the River is attacked, you may use your reaction to intercede, imposing yourself between the creature and the attacker and forcing the attack to target you instead. If the attack would trigger your Deflect Missiles feature, you may use that feature as part of the same reaction.
- Absolving Gale: While in your Form of the Wind, you may spend 1 ki point to cast the spell Feather Fall without material components. The spell ends if your form ends. Additionally, you may spend 5 ki points to cast the spell Steel Wind Strike, using any melee monk weapon as the material component. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
