Base Class: Fighter
Demon Hunters are experts in their field. No one is better at what they do than them. They, despite their name, hunt all evil creatures and monsters who would threaten the safety of civilization and the world. Some specialize in hunting larger creatures like dragons, others more humanoid monsters such as ferocious vampires and demons. They are the secret keepers of peace who hunt evil in the shadows. They are trained from at very young ages into adulthood in a specialized core fighting style and taught to develop it to their own weapon preference and style to perfection. The training is said to be so intense and contain so much material that the average age of graduation is 25 when starting at the standard age, five. This said, Demon Hunters are exceedingly rare and spread thin throughout the world as the only way to be taught is to be taken into the highly secret and prestigious school, The Academy, that the mastered craft originates from as a child or manage to find one and convince them to teach you. The core fighting style revolves around a combination of aggressive but cautious offense and an impervious defense, gaining a gross advantage over the target as quick as possible to end combat swiftly for minimal danger. Although they are trained to always be prepared for anything and everything.
(You must heavily revolve your backstory around this subclass, considering the amount of time required to learn this skill. Additionally, this subclass may not be multiclassed into unless done so in game. Additionally, this subclass was made for a specific campaign and may not work in your campaign.)
Glyph of The Meister
Meisters, or Demon Hunters, are very skilled, but their skill varies. Upon entering the school for the 1st time they receive a glowing glyph that floats above their head, this also allows them to enter the school. Their skill and access to information and resources at the school is categorized by the shape of their glyph. These ranks are obtained only via the approval of the school and are handed out very carefully and only to those who have proven to have done a great deal of good for the world and defeated evil time and time again.
One Star Meisters, or Initiates, are the beginning rank. Those who have been trained well but are not masters yet. Most remain this rank until a few years after graduation minimum.
Two Star Meisters, or Vanguards, are the second rank. These are Meisters who have seen their fair share of combat and have proven to be masters of their craft, consistently slaying the evil threats of the world. This is the rank that roughly 93% of all graduated Meisters hold.
Three Star Meisters, or Grand Masters, are absolute experts and have seen enough battle for three lifetimes. They've proven that they're more than skilled enough to slay some of the much larger threats alone, such as dragons or high ranked demons, and gladly sacrifice their lives to protect the world if the situation calls for it. Meisters with this rank/glyph and higher are often recognized as their rank by business owners, governments, and the leaders of the world and given access to information and locations otherwise unavailable to normal people. Additionally, they are given special treatment such as free transportation and rooms in inns. This rank is widely regarded as very difficult to obtain and only for those who are gifted amongst gifted people.
Four Star Meisters, or Heroes, are better than the best of the best. They've defeated world ending threats and much more in the name of peace and justice. Roughly five people currently hold this rank and all of them wield artifacts. This rank is almost unanimously agreed upon as impossible to achieve.
A Five Star Meister, or The Arbiter, is the leader of the school and all existing Meisters.
These ranks are the pillars of the school and its system. They're respected heavily by students, graduates, and most people of the world who know what they mean. Although, most common folk do not know what the glyphs mean unless well read or informed. Your glyph may be hidden at will in order to not stand out, but can be used as a form of ID.
You are graduated and a One or Two Star Meister. Your rank can only be increased by the school (at the DM's discretion). This rank represents your contribution to the world and your skills. You receive one feat of your choice to start with. Upon every new rank reached, you gain a number of feats equivalent to your new Star Ranking.
Lethal Evasion
You are well trained to be both simultaneously incredibly defensive and viciously aggressive. You bait your enemies into striking, only to dodge and counter at the last moment. When an enemy misses a melee attack, you waste no time and gain an opportunity attack. Additionally, if the opponent missed you by 1 or 2, you can add your proficiency bonus to both the attack and its damage.
Gorgon's Gaze
When a dangerous monster gives you a lustful glare, you stare it right in the eyes and charge head on. You've trained your entire life for this. You gain advantage on attack rolls against all neutral or evil nonhumanoid targets OR only on evil humanoid targets when using a weapon in which you are proficient with. Once you choose the first time you may never switch. Upon choosing write your choice in the notes of your character. Additionally, if you miss, you may add your proficiency bonus to your damage upon hitting. This stacks for every miss and resets on hit.
Bane of The Wicked
You've trained your entire life to hunt and kill all evil. In doing so you've mastered your fighting style.
You may choose two of the following options to fit your fighting style:
Choose one feat you already know and double its effects.
Gain an additional feat.
Gain a +1 AC bonus.
Gain a +3 AC bonus against your favored enemy type chosen for the Gorgon's Gaze ability.
Gain advantage on all saving throws against your favored enemy type chosen for the Gorgon's Gaze ability.
Gain an additional +1d8 of damage to attacks on your favored enemy type chosen for the Gorgon's Gaze ability.
Give disadvantage to your favored enemy type chosen for the Gorgon's Gaze ability on attack rolls against you.
Give disadvantage to your favored enemy type chosen for the Gorgon's Gaze ability on saving throws against you.
Gain half of the remaining experience required to level up in a multiclass.
Learn one cantrip and two 1st level spells from the Wizard spell list.
Learn one 3rd level spell from the Wizard spell list.
Gain a +2 bonus to your Dexterity score.
Gain a +3 bonus to one Ability score of your choice other than Dexterity.
Choose a weapon in your inventory and roll 1d6. This weapon now permanently deals an additional amount of damage equivalent to that roll while you're wielding it.
Gain an additional Fighting Style.
Gain an additional attack.
Gain an additional 10ft of movement speed.
For The People
You fight evil to defend those who cannot defend themselves. If your preferred enemy, chosen in Gorgon's Gaze, attacks a party member with a melee attack while within your range, you may make an opportunity attack against them. Roll for your attack and if it lands, roll 1d10. If you roll a 5 or below the attacks cancel out and the enemy loses their attack. If you roll a 6 or above your attack lands and cancels their attack. Additionally, if you have a ranged weapon in your inventory in which you are proficient with, or a ranged 1st level spell, you can instead only roll the attack roll and if it lands you deal double damage, but you do not cancel out the opponents attack. You may do this 3 times per long rest.
Deus Ex Machina
When all hope seems lost, when you're injured, exhausted, and staring at death, your body goes into autopilot and your instincts kick in. Your body moves for you from the muscle memory built on countless battles and the decades you trained. What would have otherwise been a death killing blow, you dodge by a hair, causing the attack to miss. You can do this up to 3 times per long rest.
