Base Class: Ranger
Rangers that choose this archetype are focused on mobility and mounted combat. Having spent a majority of their lives on the move, these rangers have developed an appreciation for steeds and the many boons that can come from a relationship built on trust with these creatures.
A Friend and Steed
At 3rd level, you learn to create a deep bond between yourself and your magically summoned steed
Having spent most of their lives on the move, wanderers are well aware of violence in the world. Recognizing the dangers that are present to individuals traveling alone, wanderers have sought out companions in the form of trusty steeds. Spending 1 hour bonding with your steed (a beast CR 1 or lower, which can occur during both short and long rests) creates a level of trust beyond that of a normal steed and rider. This trusted relationship grants the following benefits:
- Your steed is able to use your proficiency bonus when making attack and damage rolls, saving throws, and ability checks. This proficiency bonus is also added to your steed's AC
- For each level you gain after 3rd, your steed gains an additional hit die and increases its hit points accordingly
- Whenever you gain the Ability Score Improvement class feature, your steed’s abilities also improve. As normal, your companion can’t increase an ability score above 20 using this feature unless otherwise specified
- You gain +1 to attack rolls while mounted
Implicit Trust
The continued bonding between steed and rider builds a trust deep enough to withstand the dangers of combat, physical and mental
Starting at 7th level, when maintaining line of sight and within 30 feet of you, your steed has advantage on saving throws and cannot be frightened
Additionally, all attack rolls made while mounted now receive a bonus of +2
Never Alone
The bond between rider and steed has grown to the point that the steed is capable of following anywhere it's rider goes. This bond extends beyond the mortal plane, enabling the steed to traverse through the Feywilds alongside it's rider.
- Grants access to Misty Step, for both rider and steed at 11th level
Wondrous Mount
Having established an implicit trust and a bond that transcends planes, one might wonder how steed and rider could grow closer. Those who harbor such doubts receive their answer as the steed wills itself to adapt to its rider's needs. This adaptation can involve anything from minor adjustments to completely changing form.
Starting at 15th level, your steed can choose one of the following traits once per long rest:
- Amphibious - Your mount can breathe both air and water. Additionally, it gains a swim speed equal to its normal movement speed
- Badgersense - Your mount gains darkvision to 30 ft. If it already has darkvision, it gains an additional 30 ft. range. Additionally, it gains burrowing speed equal to half its normal movement speed
- Quick as Lightning - Your mount gains an additional 30 ft. of movement. Additionally, it can use the Dash action as a bonus action.
- Wind Walker - Your mount sprouts wings and gains flying speed equal to its normal movement speed. Additionally, it gains the benefits of Feather Fall.
In addition, you are granted access to the Find Greater Steed spell. This allows your steed to transform itself more completely. This does not summon a new steed but rather morphs your current steed into a new form(a ridable creature CR 3 or lower). This grants the following benefits:
- You now have access to a wider variety of steed selections. Use the stat block of your steed's new form
- Your mount's maximum ability scores are now 30. All ability score improvements carry over to the new form.
- Rolls hit dice for HP for every level over 10 plus one hit die per CON modifier
