Base Class: Monk
A combatant who's ki creates unpredictable magic effects.
Chaos Surge
Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, your ki can unleash bursts of uncontrollable energy. Once per turn, you can choose to roll a d10 immediately after you spend 1 or more ki points. The effects of you spending ki points still happen before you roll. If you roll a number lower than or equal to the number of ki points spent, roll on the Chaos Surge table to create a magical effect.
If the effect requires a spell attack, your Spell Attack Bonus equals your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier. If the effect requires a saving throw, the DC equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier.
Chaos Surge
d8 Effect
- You cast Chaos Bolt at a level (maximum of 9) equal to the number of ki points spent to activate Chaos Surge. For the next minute, you can cast Chaos Bolt as a bonus action by spending ki. For every ki point spent, the level of the spell increases by 1. The maximum amount of ki points you can spend is 9.
- For the next minute, whenever a creature hits you with an attack roll, you can use your reaction to make a melee attack against that creature.
- You cast Armor of Agathys at a level (maximum of 9) equal to the number of ki points spent to activate Chaos Surge.
- For the next minute, your unarmed strikes have a reach of 20 feet.
- A creature of your choice within 15 feet of you must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the start of your next turn. For the next minute, you can spend 1 ki point to use this effect again on each of your turns as a bonus action.
- For the next minute, you have a flying speed equal to one-third of your walking speed (round down by intervals of 5, minimum of 5 feet).
- For the next minute, you regain hit points at the start of your turn. The number of hit points gained equals the number of ki points spent to activate Chaos Surge.
- Roll a d3. For the next minute, the damage of your unarmed strikes changes depending on the number rolled: 1 - fire. 2 - cold. 3 - lightning. You also gain resistance to the damage type rolled for the duration.
Whimsical Madness
Also at 3rd level, you learn the Prestidigitation cantrip. When you cast it, roll a d6. The number rolled corresponds to the effect produced. For example, when you roll a 1, the first effect listed on Prestidigitation is produced. In this case, you would create an instantaneous, harmless sensory effect.
Energy Expulsion
At 6th level, you can unleash your chaotic ki in a burst of energy. While you have an effect from the Chaos Surge active, you can use a bonus action to end the effect and release the energy, dealing 1d10 force damage per point of ki spent to activate your Chaos Surge to every creature of your choice in a 30 foot radius around you. The creatures must also succeed a strength saving throw or fall prone.
Siphon Chaos
At 11th level, you can collect energy from dying creatures to power your chaos. Whenever a creature dies within 30 feet of you, you can use your reaction to immediately roll on the Chaos Surge table, replacing your current effect if you had one. If a feature from this subclass asks for the number of ki points spent to activate Chaos Surge, treat that number as 3.
Controlled Soul
At 17th level, whenever you roll on the Chaos Surge table, you can roll the dice twice and choose which of the effects to unleash. If you roll the same number on both dice, you can ignore the number and choose any effect on the table.
