Base Class: Ranger
Lords and landed knights can be born into their positions, and often face advancement not through martial ability, but from patronage and connection. Even the Kingsguard knights are appointed with as much consideration given to political maneuvering as martial prowess. But at The Wall things are different. Any man, be he a great lord or baseborn can rise to great heights. Night's Watch recruits are assigned to the Rangers not because of who their fathers were, but because of their fighting skill.
The Rangers of the Nights Watch are trained with a variety of weapons to better fight their wildling foes, and must quickly learn to adapt to their tundra environment when out ranging. It is said everything beyond The Wall wants to kill Rangers, and only those with cunning and true capability live long as Rangers. They learn to hunt, track, kill, hide, climb, and above all survive as they serve out their lives in the Night's Watch. Their talents are constantly tested by the hard winters, the desolate landscape, the ruthless wildlings and unpredictable giants, and the unknown horrors in the lands of always winter.
Rangers of the Nights Watch adjust to be at home in the cold and dark. They spend their days fighting warriors best described as druids and barbarians, and they learn to speak the Old Tongue and learn the secrets of the lost giants and Children of the Forest. This could lead to them favoring fey or giants or undead as their favored enemies. If you choose the Favored Terrain feature, you'd likely choose tundra, though a case could be made for the sailing Rangers of Eastwatch favoring the open sea.
And Now My Watch Begins
At 3rd level and again at 5th, 9th, 13th, and 17th, you gain access to new spells. These spells are considered Ranger spells for you but don't count against the number of Ranger spells you know. You also gain the produce flame cantrip.
I Am The Watcher On The Walls
As an action, you can sense the presence and general direction of any undead, dragon, giant, or necromancy magic in a 500 foot radius. You know the types of creatures and general sense of numbers, but not exact exact identities of the creatures. The sense lasts for 1 minute. You can use it an amount of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of once) before you must take a long rest.
I Shall Live And Die At My Post
At 3rd level you become accustomed to the cold tundra of the lands beyond The Wall. You gain resistance to cold damage and advantage on Constitution saving throws caused by exposure to the cold.
When traveling in Tundra environments, you gain advantage on Wisdom (Survival) and Intelligence (Nature) checks related to tracking, foraging for food, and finding shelter.
I Am The Sword In The Darkness
You gain Blindsight to a range of 30 feet and the benefit of the Blind Fighting Fighting Style to that range.
I Am The Shield That Guards The Realms Of Men
At 11th level your skills battling those that would raise the undead have given you hair-trigger reflexes. When a creature within 60 feet of you that you can see casts a spell, you can use your reaction to make an attack against that creature so long as it is within your attack range. You gain advantage on the attack if it is a necromancy spell. On a hit, the spell is wasted and does not take effect.
The Horn that wakes the Sleepers
At 15th level you gain the ability to call for aid in your time of need. As an action, you can blow a horn long and loud. The horn magically summons allies to your aid. They are a Knight, Priest, and Spy (statblocks can be found in the Player's Handbook) They gain temporary hitpoints equal to your Wisdom score.
These reinforcements are loyal to you and will follow your commands on your initiative. Barring instruction, they will take the dodge action and attempt to maneuver out of danger. They will disappear after one hour.. You must complete a long rest before you can summon reinforcements again.
