Base Class: Barbarian
This reworked subclass turns a weak option that at best is niche, into a subclass that is dangerous both for the enemy and the character due to its incredible output which is balanced by having an extremely dangerous main function, the Frenzy.
Note from Creator: You REALLY should not dump constitution with this subclass, as Frenzy does have self damage attached to it that is a dice value, not percentage based, so you’ll benefit from the extra cushioning it provides
Version 1.1 Notes:
- Ok so it turns out taking 1d4 damage for every 1 level can deal 336 damage at 14th level if you trigger the self damage 4 times, which is really not fair, so it’s been changed to every 2 levels, which is now a maximum of 112 damage at this level which, although scary to think about, is survivable, and if you also get the early cancel penalty on top of that, it’s a maximum of 42 damage. Combined, that 154 damage, which on my test character at 14th level, will leave them with 19 hp remaining, although this situation is if the damage is max rolled, so you won’t be as likely to be killed by simply missing 4 attacks.
Frenzy
When entering a rage, you enter a crazed frenzy state from rage boiling over, which grants you the effect of the haste spell, but you will take 1d4 psychic damage for every 2 player character levels if you: miss an attack, do not use up all of your attacks in a turn, fail to do damage above 75% of what you did the previous turn, or use the dodge action. Your frenzy has a duration of 2 minutes, but if you take the 1d4 damage penalty 4 times during one frenzy (raised to 6 at 14th level), the frenzy will automatically cancel and deal 1d6 damage per level.. When your Frenzy ends, you suffer one level of exhaustion.
Mindless Rage
Beginning at 6th level, you can’t be charmed or frightened while raging. If you are charmed or frightened when you enter your rage, the effect is suspended for the duration of the rage.
Explosive Frenzy
Beginning at 10th level, while in a crazed frenzy, the sheer amount of rage built up can cause explosive outbursts of willpower. During a frenzy, you may choose to take 2 failures on the frenzy requirements in order to regain an attack action that’ll deal half damage, 5ft of movement, an extra reaction, and the grapple action being mixed with an unarmed attack, but only for the first attack after use.
Manic Pummel
Starting at 14th level, When grappling a creature while in a frenzy, you may make a number of unarmed attacks that equal 1+CON-CHA
