Monk
Base Class: Monk

When the gentleman learns archery, it is to preserve his heart.

That is why if his heart is upright, then his body will be correct.
If his heart has respect, then his expression will be serious. If his heart is peaceful, then his breath will be comfortable.
If his heart is concentrated, then his vision will be focused. If his heart is coherent, then he will be timely and principled.
If his heart is clear, then he will be deferential and respectful. If his heart is grand, he wins but is not overzealous, he loses but is not deflated.
With these seven things in order, the gentleman’s virtue will be complete.

In archery, you shoot for your personal target. The target: your heart. Each person shoots for their own heart. Each is obtaining their heart alone."

Note: This class is intended to be used with LaserLlama's Alternate Monk, and makes references to features and ki/martial arts die scaling from that class. While it will also work just fine with the standard 5th Edition Monk with only minor wording changes, please be mindful of this when considering adding it to your campaign!

Monks that adopt this Tradition value grace, poise and a state that brings serene clarity of mind. In their eyes, the pursuit of archery is not simply for combat, but a means to observe virtue and develop oneself. You have been trained in archery on horseback, to fire a bow while blindfolded, and to pinpoint the wings of an insect in flight. As you attain peace and oneness with your arrow, no feat of archery will prove to be beyond your grasp.

Unlike traditional war archers, these masters of the bow prioritise fluidity and balance. You might be a mobile skirmisher, unleashing swift and accurate shots while on the move, performing acrobatic manoeuvres to harry your foes. Alternatively, you might be still and tranquil, remaining at ease even in the harshest of battles to ensure your arrowheads find their mark. You might maintain traditional martial arts practices with other weapons, or entirely eschew them in favour of becoming one with the bow. Regardless of how you approach a monastic archer's spirituality and doctrine, your skill with ranged weaponry will likely surpass any other forms of armed and unarmed combat you commit yourself to.

Monastic Precision

Your training has granted you unique skill not only with the bow, but with other graceful arts. You gain proficiency with longbows, and in Acrobatics and calligrapher's supplies. Attacks you make with longbows and shortbows are considered Martial Arts attacks. You can use your Wisdom, in place of your Dexterity, for your ranged weapon attack and damage rolls.

Whenever you make either a Dexterity (Acrobatics) or a calligrapher's supplies check, you gain a bonus to your roll equal to one roll of your Martial Arts die.

Zen State

You have learned to enter a state of spiritual focus known as the Zen State. As a bonus action, you can enter a Zen State, which grants you the following benefits for the duration:

  • You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks.
  • You do not have disadvantage on ranged weapon attacks that you make at the weapon's long range.
  • You do not have disadvantage on ranged weapon attacks that you make when you are within 5 feet of a hostile creature.
  • When you roll a 1 or 2 on a damage die for an attack you make with a ranged weapon, you can re-roll the die. You must use this new roll, even if the new roll is a 1 or a 2.

You can maintain this Zen State for up to 1 minute, and you must concentrate on it as if you were concentrating on a spell. The Zen State ends early if you lose your concentration, or if you choose to end it on your turn (no action required). Once you enter a Zen State, you must finish a short or long rest before you can do so again. Alternatively, when you have no uses of this feature left, you can expend 2 Ki Points to use it again.

Zen Archery Techniques

You learn certain Techniques at the levels noted in the table below. They don't count against your number of Techniques Known, and they cannot be switched upon gaining a level.

3rd: step of the wind
You move with the speed of the wind. You can take the Dash or Disengage action as a bonus action. When you do so, your jump distance is doubled until the end of your current turn.

5th: seeking strike
Your spirit guides your strikes when your body fails. When you miss with a Martial Arts attack, you can spend 1 Ki Point to re-roll your attack. You must use the new result.

9th: aura sight
You can pinpoint minute sounds and changes in pressure to sense your surroundings. You gain blindsight with a range of 20 feet. Within that range, you can see anything that isn't behind total cover, even if you are blinded or in darkness. You can see invisible creatures in that range, unless the creature successfully hides from you. As you gain levels in this class the range of this blindsight increases; at 13th level (30 feet) and 18th level (60 feet).

Note: These Techniques are a base class feature of the Alternate Monk. They can be obtained without this subclass. The Zen Archery Techniques feature simply grants them as additional Techniques Known.

Ever-Flowing River

When a creature targets you with a melee attack while you are in your Zen State, you can use your reaction to roll your Martial Arts die and add it to your Armor Class against that attack. Should the attack miss, you can immediately choose to use one of the following effects;

  • You move up to half your walking speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • You force the attacking creature to make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, it is knocked prone and has its speed reduced to 0 until the end of its turn. Any creature that is at least one size larger than you has advantage on its saving throw.

Roaring Tempest

Your focus and skill with the bow allows you to fire with incredible speed and precision. When you take the attack action while you are in a Zen State, you can make a single ranged weapon attack as a bonus action on that turn.

Moreover, your attacks with ranged weapons now deal additional damage equal to your Wisdom modifier, and score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20.

Note: The Alternate Monk receives this feature at Level 10, not Level 11.

Serenity of the Wind

You are a true master of the bow arts, and with your heightened awareness, it is rare that your arrows do not find their marks. You no longer need to concentrate to maintain your Zen State. Furthermore, you no longer need to be able to see a target to make a ranged weapon attack, so long as it is in range and there is a straight path for the ammunition to travel.

In addition, if you roll a 1 on the d20 for a ranged weapon attack roll while you are in your Zen State, you can reroll the d20. You must use the new roll, even if it is another 1.
