Base Class: Rogue
Lurking in the shadows, a human keeps watch for his target. A noble of lower stature turns the corner and almost bumps into what seems to be an apparition. He draws his sword and swings wildly at the apparition that has been haunting him for weeks, to no avail. The strikes barely hit the apparition. After the nobles feeble attempts, the human deftly stabs the noble cutting a major artery; leaving him standing in the middle of the street, babbling about murderous ghosts.
A gnome is guarding himself against a group of thieves, trying to back himself into the shadows he knows are just a few feet away. The lead thief lunges to strike at the gnome, when all of a sudden darkness spreads. The gnome stabs the thief quickly, then whispers into the thief's ear before stepping into the shadows. He then looks down at the thieves from the roof of a nearby building, the thieves unaware of where their adversary went.
A tiefling is hiding in the bushes, carefully watching the procession stroll by. She is waiting for the perfect moment to strike, she gets the opportunity when her target passes by the bush and is too caught up in the moment of the parade. The tiefling appears right in front of her target, slicing his throat, then fades into the shadows of the passing procession. The target falls to the ground, blood flowing freely from his neck and no one the wiser for what happened.
Veil Stalkers are trained in the art of walking between the veil of life and death. Due to this abilty to pass through the veil you can go unseen, so to speak, through the world. Those who choose this archetype may have many reasons to "live" like this; someone close to you has died prematurely and you wanted revenge, you were killed with unfinished business, your mentor pushed you beyond your capabilities. Regardless of the reason why, Death and/or the Forces of Chaos have deemed that it was not your time to die; and thus sent you, or at least part of you, back to the land of the living.
Bonus Proficiencies
When you choose this archetype, at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with the arcana skill. You also gain darkvision up to 30 feet, including magical and non-magical darkness. If you already have darkvision add a 30 foot bonus to it.
The Veil
Starting at 3rd level, you gain the ability to phase. When you phase you are able to walk halfway in this plane, and halfway in Death's domain. You are almost invisible, able to pass as a shadow of your former self, you can only be detected with a Wisdom (Perception) check (DC 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your proficiency bonus). While phasing you are resistant to all physical forms of damage, but you are also vulnerable to magical attacks. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier (a minimum of once). You regain all spent uses after finishing a short or long rest.
The Shadow
You are becoming closer to understanding the powers of life and death, the magic within the Veil becomes clearer to you. Starting at 9th level, you gain the ability to cast misty step up to your rogue level divided by 2 (minimum of once), without any of the components. You are also able to cast darkness as a 5th level spell. You must then finish a long rest to use this feature again. Also, if you cast darkness and another creature casts a light spell or similar spell at a higher level than your darkness, you will be blinded for up to 1d4 rounds.
Opportunity Strikes
At 13th level, You come closer to understanding the secret behind the Veil. You can use Sneak Attack with any attack made against a target that is standing in or within 5 feet of dim light or darkness. You have advantage on that attack. You can use this feature twice. You regain expended uses when you finish a short rest.
Death's Hand
You have obtained a perfect symbiosis with the Veil and are able to pass through it at merely a thought. Starting at 17th level, when you use misty step and are able to succeed at a Dexterity(stealth) check against your targets passive perception as the DC, you have advantage on attack rolls and your sneak attack damage increases to 9d8 (10d8 when you reach 19th level). If your target is surprised and you hit it, it must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save you get maximum damage for your attack.
