Monk
Base Class: Monk

While most monks spend years perfecting control over their body, the Way of the Rider focuses on gaining control over and using another body to their advantage, a mount. By combining the muscles of a steed and the precision of a Rider Monk, the two can become unstoppable.

Borne to the Saddle

Starting at 3rd level, your mastery as a rider becomes apparent. You have advantage on saving throws made to avoid falling off your mount. If you fall off your mount and descend no more than 10 feet, you can land on your feet if you’re not incapacitated.

If you are currently riding the mount, you may choose to have your mount make unarmed strikes for you as part of the flurry of blows bonus action.  These attacks use your mount's attack bonus as well as damage for their unarmed strike, however still count as you "making" the attack.

You gain proficiency in the animal handling skill. If you are already proficient, you may double your proficiency bonus.

Finally, mounting or dismounting a creature costs you only 5 feet of movement, rather than half your speed.

Trained Mount

At 6th level, you may choose one non-independent mount at a time to gain the following features.

  • It gains the monk unarmored defense feature.
  • It gains the unarmored movement feature with bonus speed equal to your own.
  • It gains an increase in max hp equal to 2 x your monk level
  • It may use the dash and disengage actions as bonus actions
  • Each of the mount's ability scores increase by your proficiency bonus to a maximum of 20

Galloping Technique

At 11th level, you have become so accustomed to the rocking of a galloping mount, that you are able to take advantage of the force. If your mount has moved at-least half of its movement speed this turn, you gain a bonus both to hit and to damage equal to your wisdom modifier, both of which carry over to any attack made through your mount.

In addition, any time you are subjected or subject yourself under an effect which is targeting only you, you may choose for it to only target your mount, or for it to target both of you.

Perfected Bond

At 17th level, you and your mount have formed an inseparable bond. Instead of controlling your mount, it now counts as an independent creature, controlled by the same player. The mount gains a telepathic bond with the monk, which has a seemingly infinite range. The mount can travel long distances and return by itself, and can take almost any action a player character could, within reason. When reduced to 0 hp, the mount now will make death saving throws, using the same rules as a player.
