Base Class: Wizard
A large part of casting spells is shaping and directing them. Some wizards learn to circumvent this extra effort and channel the magic directly into their targets, thereby forgoing the physical form certain spells may take.
Spelltagging is often seen as crude, but you see it for the artform that it is. By forcing magic to flow directly from your body into the body of another creature, you can bypass the usual defenses your enemies might typically have against your spells.
Spelltagging
2nd-level School of Spelltagging feature
Starting when you select this school at 2nd level, you gain the ability to channel your magic through your hands and directly into your target.
Whenever you cast a spell which targets a single creature other than yourself, if that spell would require the target to make a saving throw, you can attempt to spelltag that creature instead of casting the spell normally. When you do, you make a melee spell attack against that creature. On a hit, treat that creature as having failed its saving throw.
Additionally, you can treat any ranged spell attack as a melee spell attack instead.
Magic-Infused Steps
2nd-level School Of Spelltagging feature
Also at 2nd level, you can channel your magic into your feet to You can dash or disengage as a bonus action. When you dash or disengage in this way, you gain a bonus to your AC equal to your Intelligence modifier until the start of your next turn. You lose this benefit at the start of your next turn.
You can take this bonus action a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus and regain all expended uses at the end of a short or long rest.
Stealth Tagging
6th-level School of Spelltagging feature
Starting at 6th level, you can subtly spelltag targets without arousing suspicion. You can ignore any Verbal components of spells when you attempt to spelltag a creature, and you can make a Dexterity (Stealth) check against that creature’s Intelligence (Arcana) or Wisdom (Perception) to attempt to spelltag that target without them noticing.
Additionally, when you successfully spelltag a creature, you can choose to delay that spell for up to 1 minute. You must maintain concentration on that spelltag for the duration, as though concentrating on a spell. At the end of this duration, or if you lose concentration, the spelltag activates and the spell takes effect on the target immediately. When you reach 14th level, you can delay a spelltag for up to 10 minutes.
A dispel magic or remove curse spell removes a spelltag without activating it.
Spellshudder
10th level Spelltagging level
By 10th level, infusing your magic directly into your target disrupts the flow of their energy. While a creature is affected by a spell which you cast using Spelltagging, or while it has a delayed spelltag on it, its own abilities are disrupted by your magic. Whenever it would make a Constitution saving throw to maintain concentration on a spell, it has a penalty to that saving throw equal to your Intelligence modifier. Additionally, if that creature has an ability which recharges at the start of its turn by rolling a d6, it regains use of that ability only if it rolls a 6, regardless of the range noted on that ability.
Spelltag Glyph
14th-level Spelltagging feature
When you reach 14th level, you can use spelltagging to turn your targets into walking bombs of arcane force. You can spelltag a creature with any spell, not just a spell which targets that creature, and delay that spell with Stealth Tagging. If you attempt to spelltag a creature with a spell which does not target them, a small glyph appears on their body where you tagged them, which can be visibly identified as a spell glyph with a successful Intelligence (Arcana) or Wisdom (Perception) check against your spell save DC.
When the spelltag activates, the spell takes effect as normal, originating from the spelltagged creature’s space. When that spell takes effect, it targets the space the creature currently occupies if it must target a space, or random targets within range if it must target creatures or objects. If you can see the spelltagged target when the spelltag activates, you can use your reaction to direct the spell toward targets of your choice which you can see within the spell’s range.
