Base Class: Ranger
You were a promising ranger until you died. However, some necrotic force has called you back to the realm of the living and invested you with some of it's power. Perhaps you have been called back because some villain must be stopped. Or perhaps the necrotic force simply wants you to keep killing and sending more souls to the underworld.
Are you enthralled or free? undead looking or mostly intact? Do you maintain all your memories or no? Work with your DM to decide what your rebirth means for your character. Also, warn your DM ahead of time that you intend to take this subclass at level 3. The DM should then work your death into the campaign such that you die and are reborn when you gain your third level and select this subclass.
Dark Ranger Magic
Starting at 3rd level, you learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Dark Ranger Spells table. The spell counts as a ranger spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of ranger spells you know [you will need to manually add the spells not in bold]. In addition, whenever you learn spells, you can learn any necromancy spells from any class' spell list. Those spells count as ranger spells for you.
Dark Ranger Spells
| Ranger Level | Spell |
|---|---|
| 3rd | cause fear |
| 5th | blindness/deafness |
| 9th | bestow curse |
| 13th | blight |
| 17th | negative energy flood |
Necrotic Warrior
3rd level Dark Ranger feature
You may have your weapons deal necrotic damage instead of their normal damage type.
You are undead in addition to your other types. You don't need to eat, drink, or breathe.
Darkened Gaze
3rd level Dark Ranger feature
Your eyes are black or gray. They are empty, just like your soul.
You gain darkvision out to a range of 60 feet. If you already have darkvision from your race, its range increases by 30 feet.
You also gain the Blind Fighting fighting style. If you already learned Blind Fighting, you may select a different fighting style instead.
Blind Fighting: you have blindsight with a range of 10 feet. Within that range, you can effectively see anything that isn’t behind total cover, even if you’re blinded or in darkness. Moreover, you can see an invisible creature within that range, unless the creature successfully hides from you.
Conduit of Necromancy
7th level Dark Ranger feature
Your weapons have become infused with the same darkened energy that has infused you.
On any turn in which you hit a creature with a weapon attack that deals necrotic damage, you gain the option to:
- Cast a spell from the list of Dark Ranger Spells with only that creature as the target (you may ignore range restrictions to do so) as a bonus action
- Spend one of your hit dice as a bonus action.
Champion of the Dead
11th level Dark Ranger feature
Whatever being or magic called you back from the grave has given you the ability to call others back too.
You gain resistance to necrotic damage
You learn the spell animate dead and it doesn't count against your total number of known spells
Conduit of Necromancy can now be used to cast animate dead on any turn in which you kill a humanoid creature with necrotic damage.
Death Strike
15th level Dark Ranger feature
You have become as inevitable as death itself.
You critically strike on a 19 or 20.
Whenever you critically strike with a weapon attack that deals necrotic damage, you may use Conduit of Necromancy without expending a spellslot. Casting animate dead this way requires that your critical strike killed the creature and it was a humanoid.
