Base Class: Monk
A red oni and a blue oni are calling to you. One calls for action, while the other calls for caution.
An angel and a devil are calling to you. One calls for vengeance, while the the other calls for forgiveness.
The moon and the sea are calling to you. One calls for you to push, while the other calls for you to pull.
There are two paths calling for you. Two paths, and yet they are one, for neither is complete without the other.
Stance Dance
When you take this subclass at 3rd level, you learn to channel your ki into Stances, mystical forms which enhance your abilities.
As a bonus action, you can spend 3 ki points to enter the Wrath stance, granting the following benefits:
- You can use your Flurry of Blows feature without expending any ki points. You can use your Flurry of Blows as part of the bonus action used to enter this stance.
- Your unarmed strikes deal additional damage equal to your proficiency bonus.
- You have advantage on melee attack rolls, but attack rolls against you also have advantage.
Alternatively, you can spend 3 ki points as a bonus action to enter the Calm stance, granting the following benefits:
-
You can use your Patient Defense feature without expending any ki points. You can use your Patient Defense as part of the bonus action used to enter this stance.
-
Your movement speed increases by 10 feet.
-
The reach of your unarmed strikes is increased to 10 feet.
You can only be in one stance at a time. If you attempt to enter a stance while you are already in a stance, your first stance ends. Your stances last for 1 minute, or until you end them early as a bonus action. Your stances also end early if you are knocked unconscious.
Mantra
Even when you are not in one of your stances, the lessons each one teaches remain ingrained in your body and spirit. At 6th level, you gain the following abilities:
- Blazing Passion: When you make a Strength check, you can spend 1 ki point to add one roll of your Martial Arts die to the check. If you are in Wrath, you can use this feature without expending any ki points.
- Cold Calculation: When you make a Wisdom check, you can spend 1 ki point to add one roll of your Martial Arts die to the check. If you are in Calm, you can use this feature without expending any ki points.
Endless Dance
Also at 6th level, you gain the ability to transfer between stances with greater fluidity. As a bonus action, while you are in one of your Stances, you can spend 1 ki point to end the benefits of your current stance and enter the other stance.
Harmony
At 11th level, the mental distinction between your forms begins to dissolve, allowing you to strike fiercely in times of calm while shrugging off blows in your wrath.
- If you are hit by an attack while in Wrath, you can expend 1 ki point and your reaction to reduce the damage taken by your Monk level plus one roll of your Martial Arts die.
- If an attack misses you while you are in Calm, you can expend 1 ki point and your reaction to make one weapon attack against the attacker. If the attack hits, it deals additional damage equal to your Monk level.
Reach Heaven
At 17th level, the power of the your stances merge into a new Divinity stance. As a bonus action, you can expend 6 ki points to gain the benefits of both the Wrath and Calm stances. When you do so, you gain the ability to use both your Flurry of Blows and your Patient Defense feature as part of the same bonus action without expending any ki points. You can also use both features as part of the bonus action used to enter this stance.
The Divinity stance counts as being in both the Wrath and Calm stances for the purposes of your Mantra and Harmony features.
