Base Class: Paladin
The Gunslinger of Gilead is a wise man. He is trained in many ways of martial combat like his holy brethren but specializes in the use of firearms to exact holy retribution upon his foes. Many a young paladin choose the path of the gunslinger, but few survive the Trials of Manhood.
Gunslinger's Creed
"I do not aim with my hand; He who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I aim with my eye. I do not shoot with my hand; He who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I shoot with my mind. I do not kill with my gun; He who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father. I kill with my heart.”
*Many of the ideas and concepts of this subclass were inspired by Matt Mercer's Gunslinger Fighter Archetype as well as Stephen King's Dark Tower series.
Firearm Properties
Firearms are a new and volatile technology, and as such bring their own unique set of weapon properties. Some properties are followed by a number, and this number signifies an element of that property (outlined below). These properties replace the optional ones presented in the Dungeon Master’s Guide. Firearms are ranged weapons.
Reload. The weapon can be fired a number of times equal to its Reload score before you must spend 1 attack or 1 action to reload. You must have one free hand to reload a firearm.
Misfire. Whenever you make an attack roll with a firearm, and the dice roll is equal to or lower than the weapon’s Misfire score, the weapon misfires. The attack misses, and the weapon cannot be used again until you spend an action to try and repair it. To repair your firearm, you must make a successful Tinker’s Tools check (DC equal to 8 + misfire score). If your check fails, the weapon is broken and must be mended out of combat at a quarter of the cost of the firearm. Creatures who use a firearm without being proficient increase the weapon’s misfire score by 1.
Ammunition
All firearms require ammunition to make an attack, and due to their rare nature, ammunition may be near impossible to find or purchase. However, if materials are gathered, you can craft ammunition yourself using your Tinker’s Tools at half the cost. Each firearm uses its own unique ammunition and is generally sold or crafted in batches listed below next to the price.
Firearms
Name | Cost | Ammo | Damage | Weight | Range | Properties |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Small Revolver | 50g | 2g (20) | 1d8 piercing | 3 lb. | (40/160) |

Firearm Proficiency
Starting when you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with firearms, allowing you to add your proficiency bonus to attacks made with firearms.
Gunsmith
Upon choosing this archetype at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with Tinker’s Tools. You may use them to craft ammunition at half the cost, repair damaged firearms, or even draft and create new ones (DM’s discretion). Some extremely experimental and intricate firearms are only available through crafting.
Gunslinger’s Grace
Choosing the path of the gunslinger at 3rd level, you forsake your ability to channel divine energy through your melee weaponry as you have now honed your techniques to be able to channel that divine energy through your ammunition instead.
You are no longer able to use Divine Smite or add Improved Divine Smite damage to melee attacks. You are now only able to use Divine Smite and Improved Divine Smite on ranged attacks with firearms.
Oath Spells
You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed in the Gunslinger of Gilead Spells table. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how oath spells work.
Gunslinger of Gilead Spells
Paladin Level | Spells |
---|---|
3rd | sanctuary, sleep |
5th | calm emotions, hold person |
9th | counterspell, hypnotic pattern |
13th | banishment, stoneskin |
17th | hold monster, commune |
Channel Divinity
When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how Channel Divinity works.
Fan the Hammer. You can use your Channel Divinity to enter a trance and fan the hammer on your weapon, expending the rest of your ammunition and reloading in the blink of an eye. In this trance there is no chance of a misfire, but you must roll for every shot fired.
This action can only be performed with a single one-handed firearm as both hands are required.
Horn of Eld. You can use your Channel Divinity to blow into your Horn of Eld rallying yourself and your companions. All friendly creatures within 30 feet gain advantage on their next attack.
Gunslinger's Guile
At 7th level, you are so practiced in drawing your weaponry that you are able to do so in the blink of an eye. You now have advantage on initiative rolls and holstering and unholstering one-handed firearms is a free action. Two-handed firearms can be stowed and brandished using a bonus action.
Blinding Reload
Starting at 15th level, you are able to reload any firearm with a bonus action.
Wastelands
At 20th level, you gain the ability to harness the power of the wastelands. As an action you can become an avatar of frontier justice, gaining the following benefits for 1 minute:
- When you take the Attack Action on your turn, you can make one additional attack as part of the action.
- You Firearm attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20 on the d20.
Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.

Earlier this week, I was thinking about making something like this. Thank you saving what limited brainpower I have.
Thank you so much for taking the time to actually make this. This is incredible and I can see that you put in a lot of effort into this. Well done!
I am so glad someone made the time to craft this. Loved the series so much. Getting to play the character based on it... I'm psyched. Thanks for sharing!
How can I add the firearms to my inventory? When I try to search for them they don't show up.
So with this class only being able to use Divine Smite and Improved Divine Smite with firearms, are paladin smite spells included with that, or will we still need to make melee attacks with those?
I was actually thinking about artificer multiclassing for something like that but it's probably to broken to ever be feasibly allowed. I didn't even think about fan the hammer I just didn't want to spend so much money on ammunition. Also does anyone know how improvised ammunition works?
well, this is busted, yall know how artificer can give guns unlimited ammo. fanning the hammer until the end of time.
but seriously, this is so cool, i am gonna play this as a 2nd class on my artificer and we are kinda rebalancing not this class, but my own gun a bit, you see. it was a glock bcos they r cool, but 12 ammo 1d10 per round is busted so im changing a core part of my character to accomodate for this masterful subclass, really, good job (buff lvl 20 thing doe)
Honestly, it's probably less underpowered and more just a bit boring with a cool sounding name. If you get to 20 and it's not dealing enough damage, you can add in the brutal critical feature from barbarian, probably starting with 1 additional damage die and scale up from there to the full power if you still need to tweak it. I've unfortunately not been able to get any testing in to see how it works in practice. Hopefully in the next few months though.
**Edit: After thinking it over, I think having the capstone require an action to activate might make it suck. Will probably eventually change this to a bonus action so you can still do something on your turn.
This is really cool!!! The only thing id change is maybe tweak the level 20 feature cuz it seems a tiny bit underpowered. Other than that this is stunning
will do ^^
Hey, no problem. I haven't gotten around to testing it yet since I came up with it while in the middle of a campaign and now moved just before the pandemic. Let me know if you think Anything needs to be tweaked.
i was actually thinking on trying to homebrew something like this, but now i dont have to! TYVM!!

Added some wording to specify what Gunslinger's Grace affects.
Changed reload from 3 to 1 for Excalibur rifle.
Added some specific directions on how Fan the Hammer can be used.
Future Updates:
Need to add the firearm options into the game.
