Base Class: Wizard
The School of Arcanography focuses on the power of the written word to record and provide ready access to a larger store of magical knowledge. Arcanographers transcribe the secrets of many different schools of magic and use their expertly crafted glyphs, lettering, and notation to alter spells and unlock novel magical effects.
Practiced Penmanship
2nd-level School of Arcanography feature
Beginning when you select this school at 2nd level, the gold and time you must spend to copy any spell into your spellbook are halved.
You also gain proficiency with calligrapher's supplies. If you already have this proficiency, you instead gain proficiency with forgery kits or one other type of artisan's tools of your choice.
Arcane Codex
2nd-level School of Arcanography feature
Using annotation techniques developed by the most literate scholars of the arcane, you have turned your spellbook into an advanced repository of magic.
You can add one wizard spell to your spellbook in addition to the two you normally learn at this level. The spell must be of a level for which you have slots. You learn an additional spell in this way again when you reach 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th, and 18th level.
You can use the book as a spellcasting focus for your wizard spells.
If necessary, you can replace the book more quickly than an ordinary wizard's spellbook. Over the course of a long rest, you write arcane sigils in a blank book or a magic spellbook to which you’re attuned. At the end of the rest, the new book transforms into your Arcane Codex, along with all its spells. If the previous book still existed somewhere, all the spells vanish from its pages.
While you are holding your Arcane Codex, you can refer to the text for the secrets of altering and empowering spells and other magical effects. This adept study is represented by a number of Codex Points. You can spend these points to fuel various codex features, and you initially know two such features. As a bonus action, you can do one of the following:
- Abridged Ritual. Prepare to cast a wizard spell as a ritual using the spell’s normal casting time, rather than adding 10 minutes to it. Regardless of the normal casting time, you must begin casting the spell before the end of your next turn.
- Edit Essence. As a bonus action, you temporarily replace the damage type of the next spell you cast before the end of your next turn with a different type. The formulae recorded in your spellbook at this level allow you to alter the damage type to one of the following: acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison.
You have a number of Codex Points equal to your Intelligence modifier (a minimum of one). When you finish a short rest (you must spend at least 30 minutes of the rest reading your Arcane Codex, but you may use Arcane Recovery on the same rest), you regain 1d4+1 expended Codex Points. You regain all expended Codex Points when you finish a long rest.
Illuminated Manuscript
6th-level School of Arcanography feature
At 6th level, you have studied and bonded with your Arcane Codex so deeply that the text takes on a life of its own, and the magical understanding within gains an illustrated form that literally leaps off the page.
You can summon an illustration, a sentient, visible manifestation of the magical knowledge archived in your Arcane Codex. As a bonus action while the book is on your person, you can cause the illustration to appear as a Tiny spectral object, hovering in an unoccupied space of your choice within 5 feet of your Arcane Codex. The illustration is intangible and doesn’t occupy its space, and it sheds dim light in a 10-foot radius. It looks like a ghostly tome, a cascade of text, or the visage of a creature, such as a scholar from the past, a librarian, a secretary, or a clerk (your choice).
While present, the illustration can hear and see, and it has darkvision with a range of 60 feet. The manifestation can speak and understand the languages you know. The assistant can move freely on its own (no action required by you), but it always remains within 5 feet of your Arcane Codex. It can pass through creatures but not objects. It cannot be summoned and is automatically dismissed whenever there is no unoccupied space free of obstructions within 5 feet of your Arcane Codex. You can dismiss the illustration back into its book as a bonus action.
If your Arcane Codex is destroyed, the illustration is automatically dismissed and cannot be summoned until your Arcane Codex is replaced. If someone casts dispel magic on the illustration, it is automatically dismissed and cannot be summoned until you finish a short or long rest.
While the illustration is present, it can help you recall, focus on, or manipulate the magic contained in its pages, giving you additional ways to use your Codex Points. As a bonus action, you can do one of the following:
- Refresh Recollection. Recall a spell that is in your spellbook but that you do not have prepared, which you must cast before the end of your next turn, after which it again fades from your memory.
- Transcription Transposition. Teleport, magically swapping places with the illustration.
- Bolster Focus. Give yourself advantage on the next Constitution saving throw you make to maintain concentration on a spell within 1 minute.
In addition, your codex now contains the formulae for additional damage types. When you use the Edit Essence feature, you can change a spell's damage type to any of the following: acid, cold, fire, lightning, necrotic, poison, psychic, or thunder.
Esoteric Expertise
10th-level School of Arcanography feature
You gain proficiency in Arcana if you don't already have it. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses this proficiency. You also learn two languages of your choice.
Unbound Illumination. Your summoned illustration can freely hover up to 20 feet from your Arcane Codex.
In addition, your codex now contains the formulae for additional damage types. When you use the Edit Essence feature, you can change a spell's damage type to any of the following: acid, cold, fire, force, lightning, necrotic, poison, psychic, radiant, or thunder.
Arcane Archive
14th-level School of Arcanography feature
Your Arcane Codex has become a truly extensive chronicle of magical understanding equivalent to some entire libraries. Despite your breadth of study, you have transcribed the most profound secrets of one branch of magic.
You gain the 14th-level feature of one Arcane Tradition of your choice from the following list: School of Abjuration, School of Conjuration, School of Enchantment, School of Evocation, School of Illusion, School of Necromancy, or Order of Scribes.
