Base Class: Ranger
Mistrunners channel the powers of the mists to obscure their activities from their foes. These rangers shroud themselves in mist, using it to empower their defense of their homelands. In Faerûn, it is believed that this archetype was established by half-elven descendants of ancient Eaerlann in the region of the Shining Falls of the River Delimbiyr, but other practitioners can be found in the Misty Forest, the Greycloak Hills, and elsewhere. In some worlds, these rangers are known as Brocken rangers, after the mountainside where their spectres are commonly manifested.
Mistrunner Magic
3rd-level Mistrunner feature
You learn an additional spell when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Mistrunner Spells table. The spell counts as a ranger spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of ranger spells you know.

Mist Sight
3rd-level Mistrunner feature
You gain the ability to see through heavy obscurement caused by opaque fog and mist – such as the fog cloud spell – out to a range of 60 feet. While other creatures suffer the blinded condition, you instead treat the area as lightly obscured.
Shroud of Mists
3rd-level Mistrunner feature
As a bonus action, you may shroud yourself in obscuring mists for 15 feet around you, which dampen sound and make it difficult for your opponents to know your precise location and intentions, allowing you to strike with deadly accuracy. You have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks and you can give yourself a bonus to your initiative rolls equal to your Wisdom modifier. At the start of your first turn of each combat, if you take the Attack action on that turn, you can make one additional weapon attack as part of that action. If that attack hits, the target takes an extra 1d8 damage of the weapon’s damage type.
Floating Mists
7th-level Mistrunner feature
You can condense your mists to lift you up into the air. As a bonus action, you gain a flying speed of 10 feet and can hover. This effect lasts for 1 minute or until you are incapacitated.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Mist Spectre
11th-level Mistrunner feature
When you are shrouded in mists and there is a nearby light source (this effect does not work in darkness), you can use a bonus action to project a mist spectre. This creates an elongated projection of your shadow upon the mists up to 15 feet from you in an unoccupied space. This spectre is a magical, translucent, gray image of you that lasts until it is destroyed, until you dismiss it as a bonus action, until you manifest another spectre, or until you’re incapacitated.
Your spectre has AC 14 + your proficiency bonus, 1 hit point, and immunity to all conditions. If it must make a saving throw, it uses your saving throw bonus for the roll. It is the same size as you, and it occupies its space. On your turn, you can mentally command the spectre to move up to 30 feet in any direction (no action required). If your spectre is ever more than 30 feet from you at the end of your turn, it is destroyed.
You can use the spectre in the following ways:
- As a bonus action, you can teleport, magically swapping places with your spectre at a cost of 15 feet of your movement, regardless of the distance between the two of you.
- When you take the Attack action on your turn, any attack you make with that action can originate from your space or the spectre’s space. You make this choice for each attack.
- When a creature that you can see within 5 feet of your spectre moves at least 5 feet away from it, you can use your reaction to make an opportunity attack against that creature as if you were in the spectre’s space.
Insubstantial Defense
15th-level Mistrunner feature
Your gain the ability to briefly turn into mists, enabling you to lessen the harm done to you during battle. When you take damage from an attack, you can use your reaction to give yourself resistance to all that attack’s damage on this turn.
