Base Class: Monk
Monks who follow the Way of the Mantis are often devotees of the god Majere. After the Cataclysm, when clerics disappeared from the world, much of the knowledge of the gods was lost. Majere’s teachings, inspired by the contemplative serenity of insects, lay forgotten in ancient, crumbling monasteries. In the early years of the Age of Despair, many sought refuge from the violence and uncertainty in the world. They rebuilt the abandoned monasteries and rediscovered ancient texts, explaining the philosophy of self-discipline, mindfulness, and industriousness. From these writings they also learned the secret of channeling their ki into a fighting style that emphasizes the patient serenity of the praying mantis.
Mantis Style
When you take this tradition at 1st level, you learn a style of martial arts inspired by the serene wisdom of the mantis, granting you the following benefits:
- When you hit a creature with one of the attacks granted by your Flurry of Blows feature, you can immediately force the target to make a Strength saving throw. On a failed save, you throw the target up to 15 feet in a direction of your choice. The target takes an additional 1d8 points of damage and lands prone. You may only use this feature once on your turn.
- When you use your Patient Defense feature and a creature misses you with an attack, you can make an unarmed strike against that creature as a reaction.
- When you use your Step of the Wind feature, you gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed until the start of your next turn.
Prayer of the Mantis
At 6th level, when you use your Stunning Strike feature, the target has disadvantage on its Constitution saving throw.
Additionally, you can add either your Wisdom or Dexterity modifier to the damage of your unarmed strikes and monk weapons.
Gift of the Mantis
Beginning at 11th level, you can spend 6 ki points to call forth a servant of the god Majere: a celestial which takes the form of a giant mantis (see chapter 8 of Tasslehoff's Pouches of Everything Revised for the statistics) and remains for 1 minute.
The giant mantis obeys your verbal commands (no action required by you), is friendly to you and your allies, and acts on your turn. Once you summon the Gift of the Mantis, you may not do so again until you complete a long rest.
Creeping Doom
At 17th level, you can spend 7 ki points to cast the insect plague spell.
