Bard
Base Class: Bard

With a recipe book in hand, and a familiar in tow, dawning the baker's signature toque, a College of Baking bard appears like a student of a wizard school, albeit only in likeness. Rather than rigorous study over spells and the arcane like such wizards, or even instead of a lute or a limerick like that of other bards, you focus your attention on the art of baking. This teachings of this college enable you to weave the artistry of baking with performative and magical skills to create enticing bardic treats. Your practice allows you to conjure such delights out of thin air, without the need for physical ingredients. As your knowledge of baking grows, the treats you can conjure do as well, as you delve into otherworldly flavours and textures. Though you may appear less performative than other bards, you find ways to express your artistic ability alongside with your familiar to inspire all of those that come across you, and your signature baked goods.

Baking makes me focus. On weighing the sugar. On sieving the flour. I find it calming and rewarding because, in fairness, it is sort of magic - you start off with all this disparate stuff, such as butter and eggs, and what you end up with is so totally different. And also delicious.

~Pippin Crumblefoot, The Whiskered Whisker

Recipe Book

3rd-level College of Baking feature

As a student of a unique form of bardic magic, you have a recipe book containing recipes that represent your expertise. At 3rd level, you have a recipe book containing three 3rd-level recipes of your choice. Your recipe book is the repository of the fantastical recipes you know, and the recipes might reflect your passion or personality for the art of baking.

You use these recipes as instructions, or inspiration to form your Bardic Treats. To create a Bardic Treat, you are required to know its recipe.

You prepare a list of recipes that are available for you to use, which shows your ability to cater your repertoire for different situations. You can change which recipes you have prepared in your recipe book when you finish a long rest, which can also be done before you use your Bardic Treat feature to conjure new treats for the day. Preparing a new list of recipes requires time spent studying your recipe book and memorizing the ingredients, instructions, and incantations you must make to create the Bardic Treat.

The number of recipes you can prepare, as well as their levels is displayed in the Baking Table below.

Angel Feather Slice

Prerequisite: 10th level

This treat is divine, and possesses the curative and restorative properties of celestial beings. It is decorated with edible white bird feathers, which cause the treat to flutter around briefly. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it regains hit points equal to three rolls of your Bardic Inspiration die + your Charisma modifier. For one minute, the creature also has advantage on death saving throws, and advantage on saving throws against one condition of your choice from the following list: charmed, frightened, paralyzed, petrified, or poisoned.

Biscuit of Wizardry

Prerequisite: 14th level

This treat appears like a common thin biscuit, sprinkled in brown sugar with an intricate pattern pressed into the top of it. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it is imbued with powers of wizardry for ten minutes. Throughout this duration, when the target is forced to make a saving throw against a spell or magical effect, it can use its reaction to grant itself advantage on this saving throw. If it succeeds on this saving throw to take only half damage, it instead takes no damage if it succeeds on the saving throw.

Black Pudding

This treat is held together by a mildly off-putting black, jelly-like substance. When a creature is bestowed this treat, its body becomes amorphous, and it can move through spaces as little as one inch wide for one minute. While affected, the creature can also roll your Bardic Inspiration die when it takes bludgeoning, piercing or slashing damage, and reduce the damage taken by the number rolled.

Boozy Bruiser

This treat is a small doughy ball, flavoured with cinnamon and booze. When a creature is bestowed this treat, you make a ranged spell attack against them. On a hit, the target takes bludgeoning damage equal to one roll of your Bardic Inspiration die + your Charisma modifier. Until the end of its next turn, whenever the creature makes an attack roll, it rolls your Bardic Inspiration die and subtracts the number rolled on the die from the attack's total.

Cake of Corrosion

Prerequisite: 10th level

This treat is a small, fluffy cake, which has a potent acidic flavour, provided by citrus fruits like lemon and oranges. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it can harness these intense acidic flavours for one minute. During this time, when the target takes the Attack action on its turn, it can replace one of the attacks with a beam of magical energy in a 15-foot line. Each creature in that area must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes acid damage equal to three rolls of your Bardic Inspiration die, and has its AC reduced by 2 until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and suffers no penalty to its AC.

Cream O' Frost

This treat wisps with cold vapour and ice magic. It is composed of a fudge-like base, with a thick and frozen cream dolloped atop. When a creature is bestowed this treat, you force it to make a Dexterity saving throw as frozen filling covers them and the ground nearby. On a failed save, the creature takes cold damage equal to three rolls of your Bardic Inspiration die and falls prone, or takes only half as much damage on a successful one. The area within 10 feet of them also becomes difficult terrain for one minute.

Cupcake of Deliciousness

Prerequisite: 10th level

This treat is absolutely to die for, and is sprinkled with dust to make it even more delicious. When a creature is bestowed this treat, you force it to succeed a Wisdom saving throw or become charmed by you for one minute. While charmed, the creature subtracts one roll of your Bardic Inspiration die from any Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma saving throws it makes within the next minute.

Each time the target is forced to make an Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma saving throw, it can remake its saving throw against the charmed condition, ending this effect early on a success.

Donut of Dragon Breath

Prerequisite: 6th level

This treat is circular, and has a light and fluffy consistency with a sugary glaze on top. Once eaten, there are undertones of spice and warmth. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it expels a dragon's breath weapon from their mouth. Creatures within a 15-foot cone of the creature must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking damage equal to four rolls of your Bardic Inspiration die on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one.

The damage type for this breath weapon is determined by rolling your Bardic Inspiration die and consulting the table below.

BARDIC INSPIRATION DIE
DAMAGE TYPE
1 or 2 Fire
3 or 4 Cold
5 or 6 Poison
7 or 8 Acid
9 or 10 Lightning
11 Necrotic
12 Radiant

Energiser Brownie

Prerequisite: 6th level

This treat is a dense brownie, which vibrates slowly, producing a low humming sound, as if imbued with incessant, kinetic energy. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it is bolstered with an uncanny surplus of energy for one minute. Once per turn, when the creature deals damage with a melee weapon attack, it can roll your Bardic Inspiration die, adding the number rolled to the total damage of the attack, and gains temporary hit points equal to the number rolled.

Everything Mousse

This treat is a swirling cosmic pattern of colours, textures, flavours and wild magic. It contains literally (almost) everything. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it must roll on the Everything Mousse table below, by rolling two of your Bardic Inspiration dice and adding the result together. The target of this treat gains the effects of the result.

Everything Mousse table

Eye of the Beholder

Prerequisite: 14th level

This treat is a thin, firm and circular cookie dough base, with gelatinous filling which resembles the central eye of a Beholder. It forms illusory eye-stalks which flow out of from the centre. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it gains truesight for 10 minutes, and cannot be surprised.

Faerie Bread

Prerequisite: 6th level

This treat is a loaf of glimmering bread, which has brightly coloured specks sprinkled throughout. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it can slip in and out of the Fey realm, as it emanates fey magic for one minute. On its turn, the creature can use a bonus action to roll your Bardic Inspiration die and teleport a number of feet equal to 10 times the number rolled.

Golden Apple Crumble

Prerequisite: 6th level

This treat melts in your mouth and tastes nostalgic. The apples used in its recipe are gilded with gold, enticing those that are bestowed it to finish the treat whole. When a creature is bestowed this treat, you force it to succeed a Wisdom saving throw or become charmed by you until the end of its next turn. While charmed, the target cannot use reactions and its speed is reduced to 0. On its next turn, it must spend its action enjoying the treat and stuffing its mouth.

If the creature failed its initial saving throw by 5 or more, and is concentrating on a spell or effect that requires concentration, its concentration immediately ends as it is too overwhelmed by the flavour of your treat.

Goodberry Pie

This treat is a perfect blend of sweet and savoury, and has a jam-like filling made from hearty goodberries. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it restores a number of hit points equal to one roll of your Bardic Inspiration die plus your Charisma modifier. For next minute, the target can roll another Bardic Inspiration die and restore hit points equal to the number rolled at the start of each of its turns. This effect does not restore hit points at the start of the turn if the creature is incapacitated.

Gracewind Slice

This treat emits a brief burst of wind, and imbues the target with a graceful step. When a creature is bestowed this treat, a shock of wind erupts from them. All other creatures within 10 feet of the target must then succeed a Strength saving throw, or be pushed 10 feet away from the creature, to the nearest unoccupied space. The target has its walking speed increased by 10 feet for one minute.

Iron Fudge

Prerequisite: 10th level

This treat appears as a dark, dense fudge, with a slightly metallic taste. When consumed, a silvery colour is left on the mouth of the creature, as it becomes hardened with iron fudge. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it gains resistance to a damage type of its choice (other than poison damage) for 10 minutes, or until it is bestowed this treat again. Damage from magical weapons ignores this resistance.

Jam Drops of Drowsiness

Prerequisite: 10th level

This treat is a shortbread cookie, with a special aromatic filling that onsets symptoms of drowsiness when a creature divulges in its delight. When a creature is bestowed this treat, you force it to succeed a Wisdom saving throw or become dazed for 10 minutes. While dazed, the target has disadvantage on Dexterity (Initiative), Wisdom (Insight), and Wisdom (Perception) checks. A creature that eats three of these treats, and fails each saving throw against this effect immediately falls unconscious for 10 minutes, or until it takes damage or another creature uses its action to wake the sleeping creature up.

Many a Milk Bun

This treat is a light and fluffy bun of delicious bread. It is truly a mundane, yet versatile piece of bread that can cleanse any palate. When you conjure this treat, it can split nicely into two and thus be bestowed twice. As such, one milk bun conjured can satiate a creature for up to 8 hours, instead of 4.

When a creature is bestowed this treat, if it is currently affected by any poison or disease, it can immediately remake any saving throws against them. If a target is under an effect bestowed by another Bardic Treat when it is bestowed this one, it can choose to have the other effects end early. Also, for the next 10 minutes, all nonmagical food and drink the target consumes is purified and rendered free of poison and disease.

Mind Layers

Prerequisite: 6th level

This treat consists of several layers of pastry, filled with a fluorescent, purple, jam-like filling. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it gains gifts from the Underdark. For 10 minutes, the creature can see normally in darkness, both magical and nonmagical, to a distance of 120 feet. For the same duration, whenever the target takes psychic damage, one creature it can see within 120 feet also takes psychic damage equal to one roll of your Bardic Inspiration die.

Moonlit Macaron

Prerequisite: 6th level

This treat emits a dim moon light, and crumbles very easily. It is a deep violet coloured treat, with a meringue-like consistency. When a creature is bestowed this treat, you make a ranged spell attack at them. On a hit, the creature takes radiant damage equal to three rolls of your Bardic Inspiration die and the next creature to attack it has advantage on its roll. Until this advantage is benefitted from, the target also emits a bright light out to a range of 10 feet, and dim light for an additional 10 feet.

Pavlova, The Spooky

Prerequisite: 6th level

This treat is a dollop of spectral meringue which gives the treat a form of a folkloristic ghost, with white drapes and a subtle glow. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it becomes invisible for one minute, or until the creature makes an attack or casts a spell. For the same duration, it is under the effects of the see invisibility spell.

Pie of Giant Strength

This treat is a large, savoury pie, with rare and unique ingredients that are boiled down to provide a strength and energy. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it is bolstered with an immense strength for one minute. When it makes a Strength check or saving throw, or an attack roll using Strength, the creature can roll your Bardic Inspiration die and add it to the roll's total.

Powdered Pastry

This treat is a densely powdered slice of pastry, with a flakey and crispy texture. When a creature is bestowed this treat, a 20-foot-radius sphere of flour is created centred around the target. The sphere does not spread around corners, and its area is heavily obscured. Any creature in the area is silhouetted in the powder, and therefore cannot benefit from the invisible condition. It lasts for one minute, until a wind of moderate or greater speed (at least 10 miles per hour) disperses it.

Shield Candy

This treat is a small replica shield made of hardened sugar. When a creature is bestowed this treat, parts of its body harden with toffee to protect it. The target gains temporary hit points equal to two rolls of your Bardic Inspiration die plus your Charisma modifier for one minute. While this creature has these temporary hit points, it also has half cover (+2 to AC and to Dexterity saving throws).

Slice of Spell-Storing

Prerequisite: 14th level

This treat appears like a common vanilla slice, before being imbued with magic, where it writhes with colour and energy, matching that of the spell school imbued in it. When you conjure this treat, you expend a spell slot of 1st to 5th level, and cast a levelled spell of that level into it. The spell has no effect, other than to be stored in the treat.

When a creature is bestowed this treat, it possesses it for ten minutes and can use it to cast the spell stored inside within that duration. The spell uses the slot level, spell save DC, spell attack bonus, and spellcasting ability of you, but is otherwise treated as if the target of the treat cast the spell. After the ten minutes, the treat disintegrates in multicoloured sparks, and does not cast the spell stored within it, and has no effect other effect.

Tart of Wild Shapings

Prerequisite: 6th level

This treat is a firm tart – the silhouette of which appears like a recognisable animal form each time conjure it. Its filling swirls with colours and textures, which coalesce to form a pleasant blend of sweet and savoury. When a creature is bestowed this treat, its body takes on druidic shape-changing abilities, enabling it to grow wings, webbings, claws and gills for 10 minutes. For the duration, the target can breathe underwater, and gains a swimming speed and climbing speed equal to its walking speed. Also, whenever the target falls from at least 10 feet above the ground, it can use its reaction to glide horizontally a number of feet equal to its walking speed, and it takes 0 damage from the fall. The creature also determines the direction of the glide.

Telepastry

Prerequisite: 10th level

This treat is a flakey pastry and is caramelised in sugar. When held to the ear, quiet whispers can be heard, and they cease when the treat is eaten. When a creature is bestowed this treat, it gains the ability to communicate telepathically with any creature within 60 feet of it for the next 10 minutes. Any other creature that is also bestowed this treat can communicate telepathically with one another. This is possible over any distance, though it can't extend to other planes of existence.

The Revenge

Prerequisite: 14th level

This treat is a dish, aptly dubbed The Revenge. Made from intricate layers of pastry, white-chocolate and ice cream filling, the treat is an edible skull served on an illusory silver platter. When a creature is bestowed this treat, you force it to make a Constitution saving throw. The creature is instantly transported to another plane, and hurtles through a nightmarish facsimile the baking process; tumbling through infernal ovens, bitterly-cold freezers and magnified knives and whisks.

At the end of your next turn, the target returns to the space it previously occupied, or the nearest unoccupied space. On a failed save, if the target dealt damage to you within the past minute, it also takes fire, cold and psychic damage equal to one roll of your Bardic Inspiration die as it reels from its horrific experience. When you roll damage for this treat, and roll the die's maximum value, you can roll another Bardic Inspiration die, and add it to the total damage that treat deals.

Bardic Treat

3rd-level College of Baking feature

With a love and passion for baking, and the magic you gain from expressing your artistry, you learn to conjure treats in a flash. With one hour of work, you can bake a number of magical treats equal to your Charisma modifier from one or more recipes that you know. This can be done during a short or a long rest. Treats created by this ability lose their magical properties after 8 hours, or until you complete a long rest, and therefore cannot bestow their effects after this duration.

While you possess these treats, you can use an action to target a creature within 60 feet and expend the magic within the treat. You can use a bonus action instead if you target yourself or a creature within 5 feet of you. If an effect requires a creature to make a saving throw, the DC equals the same as yours. If a creature becomes poisoned while under the effects of a treat, its effect immediately ends.

A single treat can sustain a creature's hunger for 4 hours. Once you use this ability once, you must complete a long rest before you can use it again. You can use it twice per long rest when you reach 14th level.

Helping Hands

3rd-level College of Baking feature

You learned magic to help you when baking, being able to summon hands to stir mixtures and add ingredients while keeping your own hands free. You learn the mage hand cantrip, which doesn’t count against the number of bard cantrips you know. When you cast the spell, you can choose to summon two hands instead of one for this casting. The hands vanish if either are ever more than 15 feet away from you or if you cast this spell again. The hands can hold 20 pounds together, but otherwise follow all other rules regarding the cantrip. You can choose the appearance of the hands, whether spectral, covered in flour or mittens.

Flavourful Familiar

6th-level College of Baking feature

The infusion of magic with baking enables you to construct and animate a small familiar. As an action, you can cast the find familiar spell by expending a use of Bardic Inspiration.

When you cast the spell, you must choose the following special form, detailed in the stat block below. This familiar can have any appearance you like, such as a gingerbread man, an animated cake, or a candied knight that wields whisks and spoons. This familiar lasts for 1 hour, or until you use this ability to summon it again.

6th-level College of Baking feature

You are able to whip up treats in a flash to make sure you are never without them. You can use a bonus action to expend one use of Bardic Inspiration to generate one Bardic Treat from  a recipe that you know.

You have a number of uses of this ability equal to half your proficiency bonus, and you restore expended uses upon finishing a long rest.

Magic of Sugar and Crumb

14th-level College of Baking feature

The magic of sugar and crumb is weaved into every one of your creations. Whenever you bestow a Bardic Treat to a creature, you can choose to also grant the creature a Bardic Inspiration die. This doesn't expend a use of your Bardic Inspiration. A creature is still unable to have more than one Bardic Inspiration at a time through this feature.
