Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

Not every paladin who breaks their oath does so with malice in their heart and evil goals in mind. Sometimes the world changes enough to invalidate the efforts of the paladin's oath. Sometimes, a paladin is left so heartbroken and disillusioned that their oath is no longer something that they are able to uphold. Sometimes, the target of a paladin's oath is killed. In all cases of a Heartbroken Paladin, the only path forward is to accept their grief and embrace it. By weaponizing their pain, they prevent others from joining them in it.

Heartbroken Spells

You gain spells at the paladin levels listed in the Heartbroken Spells table. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how oath spells work.

Heartbroken Spells

Channel Divinity

When you take this path at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.

Emissary of Grief. You can use your Channel Divinity to augment your attacks with the power of your suffering. When you hit a creature with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to force the creature to make a wisdom saving throw against either your spellcasting save DC or half the damage you dealt to them, whichever is higher. On a fail, they are stunned until the end of their next turn as you extend to them the lethargic effect of your grief.

Ethereal Mantle. As a bonus action, you can use your Channel Divinity to augment your abilities. For the next minute, you have advantage on Wisdom (Insight) and Charisma (Persuasion) checks; your speed increases by 10 feet; and once per turn you may use your reaction to gain resistance to one source of damage.

Aura of the Veil

Starting at 7th level, your grief links you more closely to the Ethereal Plane. You and any allies within 10 feet of you cannot be aged magically. In addition, you cease aging and you do not suffer any of the effects of old age. Instead, roll a d100 at advantage and add your paladin level. You die when your age reaches that number.

Once per turn immediately before or after you make a melee attack, you may teleport to any unoccupied space within 10 feet. of you.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to 1 + your Charisma modifier, and you regain all uses on a long rest.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Phantom Presence

Starting at 15th level, you are able to draw a fragment of power from the Ethereal Plane whenever you come in contact with it. When teleporting or exiting the Ethereal Plane, you may either deal 2d8 force damage or bestow 2d8 temporary HP to a creature within 5 feet of where you arrive.

Sorrow Knight

At 20th level, you become permanently merged with the power of the Ethereal Plane, which gives you three benefits:

  • You gain a fly speed of 15 feet and cannot take fall damage.
  • Your weapon attacks deal an additional 1d8 force damage.
  • Any creature that enters a space within 5 feet of you takes 2d8 force damage. A creature can only take this damage once per turn, and you can freely choose to not deal this damage.
