Fighter
Base Class: Fighter

Forming a Bond with a dragon is a long and arduous process that involves extensive mental and physical training before a dragon may find you worthy of a bond. Many would argue it isn't worth the time or trouble. Others would argue that it is the only practice worth striving towards. When done correctly, the sacred bond between dragon and rider is a force to be reckoned with.

While the practice is not rare, truly talented dragon riders are a sight to behold. Elite warriors, Riders are not to be trifled with.

Rider's Prowess

When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you learn how to ride your dragon after you complete your bond with them. You gain the following benefits:

  • You gain proficiency in the Animal Handling Skill and you use this skill when interacting with dragons
  • You learn draconic
  • You have advantage on saving throws made to avoid falling off your mount.
  • You can land on your feet if you fall off your mount and descend no more than 10 feet, provided you are not incapacitated.
  • You only need to expend 5 feet of movement in order to mount or dismount a creature
  • You gain the Mounted Combatant Feat

Dragon Mount

At 3rd level, you bond with your dragon and ride it into battle. There are many different classes, breeds, and colors of Rider Dragons that allow for a personalized bonding experience for each Rider. See the different dragon breed game statistics in the stat block, which uses your proficiency bonus  (PB) in several places.

When you bond to your dragon, it becomes soul bound to you and friendly with your allies. Your Dragon obeys your commands; however, it is an intelligent creature and may disobey your commands. If it poses too great a risk to itself or importantly, to people or things it cares deeply about.

In combat, the dragon shares your initiative sound, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. however, if you direct it to the move, the movement occurs on your turn if you are riding it. Directing the dragon to move does not require you to take any actions to do so. It can take reactions on its own, but it can only take the dodge action on its turn unless you use a bonus action to command it to take a different action. If you are incapacitated the dragon can take any action of its choice, not just dodge.

If the dragon fails three death-saving throws and dies, you must make a constitution saving throw to avoid falling prone from grief. Death will sever your bond with this dragon, however if the dragon is revived in anyway, said bond with snap back into place. If you bond with another dragon prior to your current dragon reviving, that bond is permanently severed. Bonding to another dragon requires 24 hours. A dragon may sever its bond with you at any time if it feels maltreated or abused.
