Wizard
Base Class: Wizard

Focuses on casting big spells by using the magic around them to amplify their spell slots.

Ritual of Downcasting

Upon 2nd level the Downcaster has learned a ritual to gather the magic around him to cast a spell with a spell slot one level lower. this ritual takes 10 minutes, and can be performed as part of a long or short rest. when the ritual is complete the Downcaster can cast a 2nd level or higher spell with a spell slot one level lower. this spell can be cast outright or used to charge a spell storing device, including the Downcaster's Tome of Power, and eventually their spell runes. A single Downcasting ritual can be performed as part of a short rest, while during a long rest the Downcaster can perform a number of rituals equal to their intelligence modifier; During a long rest. The Downcaster can use 2 of these downcasting rituals for 1 free casting of mage armor on themselves, so long as the spell is prepared.

Alternatively, the ritual can be used with the Tome of Power to cast a cantrip from the wizard spell list, either casting the spell outright or charging a spell storing device, allowing the charged device to be used as a magic item that allows casting of said cantrip, losing this ability if another spell is cast into the device. the Tome of Power and spell runes can be charged in this way, allowing only the Downcaster to use it.

Tome of Power

Upon 2nd level the Downcaster has focused their energy into their spell book, transforming it into a Tome of Power. this Tome allows the following:

  • The Tome may be used as an arcane focus for the Downcaster's spells.
  • The Tome may be charged with a single spell cast by the Downcaster.
  • The Tome loses its charge upon a long rest.
  • When leveling in this class, the Downcaster may choose one of the two wizard spells they learn to be one level higher than their wizard level allows them to cast.
  • The Tome contains the arcane formulas for cantrips, allowing earlier access to the cantrip formula ability.
  • The Tome can be charged with a cantrip from the wizard spell list, allowing the Downcaster to cast this cantrip using the Tome as an arcane focus.

Body of Runes

Upon 6th level the Downcaster has learned to create additional spell storing runes amongst their body parts. they have a number of Runes equal to their proficiency bonus, though more can be created through Rune Carving seen below. these runes can store a singular spell cast by the Downcaster just as the Tome can. the appearance of these Runes is specific to the Downcaster, but changes in shape and/or color between 3 distinct states: charged, discharged, and linked. Upon a long rest any charged spell runes become discharged.

The runes can be linked to a location by spending 1 minute creating the magic rune circle on any surface large enough for a 5 foot diameter circle on it, when linked in the this way, the rune circle can be used by anyone touching the rune circle to cast the spell held in the linked spell rune; the rune circle remains intact until used, and stays linked no matter the distance between it and the Downcaster, even on separate planes, but can be harmlessly discharged by the Downcaster with an action.

An additional use of the spell runes is overcharging the Tome; by using a Downcasting ritual the Downcaster can take a spell stored in a spell rune and upcast it by 1 additional level, storing it in their tome. Only the tome can hold an overcharged spell.

Additional runes can be carved into the Downcaster's body at the cost of their life force. Carving these additional runes takes 10 minutes, or can be a replacement of a Downcasting ritual during a short rest or long rest. Each rune created this way reduces the Downcaster's maximum health by an amount equal to their proficiency bonus; if the Downcaster's max health has already been reduced below half their original max, no additional runes can be carved. A discharged carved rune can be healed with a medicine check DC 10, failure causes 1 damage; alternatively, when healed by a spell that heals more than the Downcaster's proficiency bonus, the Downcaster may freely choose to have one discharged carved spell rune be healed, increasing the max health along with the healing.

Ritual of Perpetual Casting

Upon 10th level the Downcaster learns a new ritual usable only with their Tome of Power. This ritual involves taking 10 minutes, or replacing a Downcasting ritual during a short or long rest, and casting a 1st level spell into their Tome with a 2nd level spell slot, weaving the gathered magic into a loop of perpetual casting. once performed, the Tome can be used to cast the spell, and within a minute of casting the Downcaster can use a bonus action to regather the spent magic into the tome, recharging it so it is ready to be cast again, and this can be done perpetually. if the minute passes without recharging the Tome, it becomes discharged.

with the Tome charged this way, the Downcaster can use a bonus action to pull the full charge out, allowing the next cast to be upcast by 3 levels, after which the ritual needs to be performed again to recharge the Tome.

any lasting effects of the spell cast this way can only keep one casting active at a time.

upon 17th level the Downcaster can use this for a 2nd level spell, using a 3rd level spell slot.

Full Ritualization

Upon 14th level the Downcaster has realized the magic capable of casting any spell can simply be gathered from around them. with a ritual taking 1 hour the Downcaster can cast any spell they have prepared with a casting time of 1 action, without expending a spell slot. spells with a casting of up to 1 minute require a 2 hour ritual, spells with a casting time of up to 10 minutes requires a 4 hour ritual, and spells with a casting time up to 1 hour require an 8 hour ritual. Spells with a casting time larger than 1 hour cannot be fully ritualized.

Another use of this ritual is overpowering any spell; the single action spell ritual can instead be used to upcast any spell to 12th level, using the correct spell slot for the spells original level. Only the Tome is capable of holding an overpowered spell.

During a short rest, the Downcaster may forgo healing to combine both a Ritualization of a single action spell and a single Downcasting ritual. During a long rest, the Downcaster can forgo preparing different spells to instead perform a Ritualization of a single action spell, in addition to their normal Downcasting rituals.
