Barbarian
Base Class: Barbarian

The Path of the Shattered Mind is not a chosen path for the faint of heart; it is a journey that few barbarians intentionally embark upon. The origin of this tumultuous path often arises from intense trauma, exposure to eldritch forces, or an overwhelming desire for power that surpasses the bounds of sanity. Whether by accident or desperation, the barbarian on the Path of the Shattered Mind willingly shatters the barriers of their own consciousness to unlock a chaotic and devastating form of primal rage.

Embarking on the Path:

For some, the descent into the Shattered Mind begins unintentionally, triggered by a traumatic event that fractures their mental stability. Perhaps they witnessed the annihilation of their tribe, suffered a grievous personal loss, or were exposed to ancient magics that shattered the boundaries of their psyche. Others might actively seek out forbidden knowledge, tapping into eldritch secrets that push their minds beyond the brink. Regardless of the catalyst, the barbarian on this path is marked by a profound and irreversible change in their mental state.

Perception by Foes:

To foes, the Shattered Mind is a terrifying and unpredictable force of nature. In the midst of battle, this barbarian exhibits an otherworldly rage, attacking with a ferocity that seems to defy reason. Foes quickly learn to fear the chaos within the Shattered Mind, understanding that they face not just a physical threat but a relentless force capable of striking at anyone in its path. The unpredictable nature of the barbarian's attacks creates an atmosphere of dread, turning the battlefield into a place of turmoil and uncertainty.

Perception by Allies:

Allies, on the other hand, may view the Shattered Mind with a mix of trepidation and awe. They witness a comrade who willingly dances on the edge of madness, tapping into a wellspring of power that few can fathom. The Shattered Mind's presence on the battlefield is both an asset and a liability, as allies understand the destructive potential within their friend. Yet, there is a recognition that the Shattered Mind fights not just for personal gain but as a primal force defending those they hold dear.

In social settings outside of combat, allies may tread cautiously around the Shattered Mind, understanding the fragility of their mental state. However, there is also a sense of respect and admiration for the sheer willpower required to harness such chaotic power willingly.

Mind-Breaking Rage

Upon choosing this path at 3rd level, your rage becomes strong enough to break your very mental state. While raging, your rage bonus damage is doubled. However, you also lose the ability to distinguish between allies and enemies. As a result, you must roll a d6 at the start of each of your turns to determine your target for attacks:

  • 1-3: Attack the nearest creature (friend or foe).
  • 4-6: Choose your target as normal.

Mind-Guard Intervention

At 6th level, your allies become attuned to your shattered mental state. When an ally within 30 feet of you sees you rolling a 1-3 on the d6 to determine your target for an attack, they can use their reaction to shout a command or gesture, attempting to intervene. Roll a d20, adding your ally's Charisma modifier. If the result is 15 or higher, you regain control for that specific attack, allowing you to choose your target as normal.

Unbridled Fury

At 10th level, your Mind Broken Rage reaches new heights of unpredictability. While under the effects of your Mind Broken Rage, you can make one additional attack as part of your Attack action. However, this attack must be against a randomly determined creature within your reach. Roll a d6 to determine the target.

Delirious Shatterstorm

At 14th level, you can unleash a wild and uncontrollable barrage of attacks during your rage. Once per long rest, as an action while under the effects of Mind Broken Rage, you can make a number of additional melee weapon attacks equal to your proficiency bonus against randomly determined creatures within your reach. Roll a d6 for each attack to determine the target.
