Sorcerer
Base Class: Sorcerer

The Sorcerous Chaos Blade is a wild and unpredictable subclass for sorcerers who harness the chaotic forces within them to become agile, spellcasting melee warriors. Much like their cousin the Bladesinger, they combine martial prowess with spellcasting, but they do so in a way that embraces the unpredictable nature of chaos. They are not bound by the rigid disciplines of wizards or the methodical training of fighters. Instead, they channel their inner chaos to empower their every move. Their chosen weapon becomes an extension of their very soul, and their graceful, almost whimsical movements on the battlefield belie the sheer devastation they can unleash.

Dance of Chaos

Starting at 1st level, you gain the ability to enter a state of chaotic frenzy during combat. When you take the Attack action on your turn and use a one-handed melee weapon, you gain a bonus to your Armor Class equal to your Charisma modifier and can choose to enter a Dance of Chaos. Roll a d6 to determine the effect:

  • 1: Twisted Momentum: You can make one additional weapon attack as part of the Attack action until the end of your next turn.

  • 2: Unmatched Resilience: You gain resistance to all damage types until the end of your next turn.

  • 3: Chaotic Speed: Your movement speed is doubled for 1 minute.

  • 4: Furious Strike: Your attacks score critical hits on a roll of 18, 19 or 20 until the end of your next turn.

  • 5: Chaos Arcana: You can cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level without expending a spell slot. The spell must have a casting time of 1 action, and you can choose a target within range.

  • 6: Wild Surge: Roll on the Sorcerer's Wild Magic Surge table (PHB, p. 104) to create a random magical effect.

The table increases to a d8 at level 8 and a d10 at level 18. You can use Dance of Chaos a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once). You regain all expended uses after finishing a long rest.

 At level 8:

  • 7:  Bedlam Portal: Through honing your chaotic energies, you gain the ability to manipulate rifts in reality. As an action, you can open a chaotic portal within 50 feet of you and perform melee attacks or close-up actions through it, bypassing obstacles and intervening spaces. This effect remains for 1 minute or until you dismiss it as a bonus action.
  • 8: Unpredictable Strikes: Your combat style becomes even more unpredictable. For 30 seconds, when you make a melee attack with your chosen weapon while in a Dance of Chaos, you can roll an additional d6 along with your normal attack roll. If you roll a 6 on the additional d6, the attack is considered a critical hit. If you roll a 1 on the additional d6, the attack automatically misses, regardless of other modifiers. This ability adds an element of risk and reward to your attacks, reflecting the capricious nature of chaos.

At level 18:

  • 9: Flickering Defense: You momentarily phase in and out of reality, making you incredibly elusive. Until the end of your next turn, attacks against you have disadvantage, and you have advantage on Dexterity saving throws. Additionally, you can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • 10: Fury of the Unknowable: You unleash the raw, chaotic power within you, creating a maelstrom of destruction around you. Until the end of your next turn, your melee attacks deal additional force damage equal to your sorcerer level to all creatures within 10 feet of you. Affected creatures can make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC to take half damage. This effect does not harm allies.

Sorcerous Swordplay

Starting at 1st level, you gain proficiency with one martial melee weapon of your choice. You can use your Charisma modifier instead of Strength or Dexterity for attack and damage rolls with this weapon. Additionally, when you make an attack with this weapon, you can use your Charisma modifier instead of Strength or Dexterity for the weapon's damage.

Arcane Flourish

Starting at 6th level, you can infuse your melee attacks with sorcerous energy. When you hit a creature with a melee attack using your chosen weapon while in a Dance of Chaos, you can expend 1 sorcery point to deal additional damage equal to your sorcerer level. This damage is of the same type as your Sorcerous Origin feature.

Attaining Chaos: At 8th level, your connection to chaos becomes even more potent. When you enter a Dance of Chaos, you can roll a d8 instead of a d6 for the effect, gaining access to even more unpredictable and powerful abilities:

Evasion

Beginning at 14th level, you can nimbly dodge out of the way of certain area effects, such as a red dragon's fiery breath or an ice storm spell. When you are subjected to an effect that allows you to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, you instead take no damage on a successful save and half damage on a failed save.

Chaos Unleashed

At 18th level, your connection to chaos becomes even more potent. When you enter a Dance of Chaos, you can roll a d10 instead of a d8 for the effect, gaining access to even more unpredictable and powerful abilities:

  • 10: Fury of the Unknowable: You unleash the raw, chaotic power within you, creating a maelstrom of destruction around you. Until the end of your next turn, your melee attacks deal additional force damage equal to your sorcerer level to all creatures within 10 feet of you. Affected creatures can make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC to take half damage. This effect does not harm allies.
