Base Class: Ranger
You are a master of da beasts
Ranger's Companion
At 3rd level, you gain a beast companion that accompanies you on your adventures and is trained to fight alongside you. Choose a beast that has a challenge rating of 1 or lower. Add your proficiency bonus to the beast’s AC, attack rolls, and damage rolls, as well as to any saving throws and skills it is proficient in. Its hit point's equal the hit points in its stat block, it gains 1D8 + con modifier every time you gain a level in this class. It gains an ASI or a feat at the same levels you would(except the last ASI is at level 20 instead of 19). The maximum Cr of beast you can make your companion is equal to your level divided by four. If you choose a beast at a higher level it only gains ASI and hit dice for every level you have above the level in which you could acquire it (A Cr 3 beast at level 13 would gain one hit dice and one feat or ASI).
The beast obeys your commands as best as it can. It takes its turn immediately after your initiative. On your turn, you can verbally command the beast where to move (no action required by you). It can only make one attack on its turn.
If you are incapacitated or absent, the beast acts on its own, focusing on protecting you and itself. The beast never requires your command to use its reaction, such as when making an opportunity attack.
While traveling through your favored terrain with only the beast, you can move stealthily at a normal pace.
If the beast dies, you can obtain a new companion by spending 8 hours magically bonding with a beast that isn’t hostile to you and that meets the requirements.
Magic Bonds
When you cast a spell targeting yourself, you can also affect your beast(s) companion with the spell if the beast(s) is within 30 feet of you.
In addition, the beast's attacks now count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to non magical attacks and damage.
Improved Ranger Companion
You gain a second beast companion whose max Cr is your level divided by 5 and functions the same as your first companion.
Pack Tactics
You and your beast(s) have grown accustomed to fighting together, whenever you or your beast(s) attack an enemy who has the beast's allies within 5 ft., it gains +2 to hit and +1 to damage per ally

Posted Sep 16, 2020My main changes to this class are bringing the animal companion in line with other companions in official classes like the Steel defender from artificer, it felt like animal companions couldn't keep up in the same way that the steel defender could, the higher level additions to the archetype i'm not as happy with my changes in hindsight
