Base Class: Fighter
Using the power of raw strength and willpower, an Aegis Conquerer is an unstoppable force of defense first offense second. Protect you and your allies with two regular-sized shields, or one large shield. Defend those important to you with your unwavering willpower which enhances your abilities.
Shield Expertise
Starting at the 3rd level, you gain proficiency with Shields if you haven't already. After every long rest, choose a shield. The equipped shield gains additional cosmetic ghost-like features, customizable by the player. It becomes a magical Spiritual Shield. This magical shield can disconnect and reconnect with itself and is fueled by your willpower. When disconnected, it becomes two regular shields, one in each hand. While connected, it becomes one large shield equipped by both hands. The shield can be disconnected and reconnected at any time by using an action.
With two regular shields equipped, they become your offense and defense. Your main-hand shield deals 1d6 + Strength Modifier. You also gain +1 AC, in addition to the AC boost from your shield that is in your off-hand. You can use a bonus action to attack with your off-hand shield dealing 1d6 + Strength Modifier. This follows the rules of two-weapon fighting.
With one large shield equipped, you gain +3 AC from the shield. The shield deals 1d8 + Strength Modifier. With the large shield equipped, gain the Interception fighting style. If you already have the Interception fighting style, you gain a second reaction that can only be used to activate Interception.
Willpower Manifestation
Also starting at 3rd level, your Spiritual Shield deeply connects with your willpower. You gain Willpower Points equal to your Constitution modifier + 1 for every 4 levels in Fighter and are regained after a long rest. You can only have one Willpower ability active at a given time. Your Willpower Points are bonus actions and can be used to do any of the following:
- Guardian: Your willpower stretches beyond your own mind into a nearby ally. Select one ally within 10 ft. of you. They gain 3 + Constitution Modifier temporary hit points. This effect lasts for 1 minute. This amount is increased to 6 at 7th level, 10 at 10th level, and 20 for 5 minutes at 18th level.
- Return the Favor: Your shield gains ghost-like spikes that last for 1 minute. When an enemy misses you with a melee attack, they must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failure, the enemy takes 1d4 piercing damage. The damage increases to 2d4 at 7th level, 3d4 at 10th level, and 4d4 at 18th level
- Bullrush: Prepare your shield attacks to burst through enemies in a line of 15 feet. Make an attack roll for each of the enemies. For each enemy damaged by your attack, they must also make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, they are knocked prone. You can use bullrush for your next twice within 1minute. The range of your line increases to 20 ft. at 10th level, 25 ft. at 15th level, and 30 ft. as well as 4 attacks instead of 2 at 18th level.
Willpower Incarnate
At 7th level, you gain the ability to summon 1 of 2 spiritual allies from your shield to aid you and your allies in battle. This spirit obeys your command and hovers over you when it is summoned. You may use a bonus action to move this spirit to another ally. You may use this ability a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier and recharges after a long rest.
- Aegis Apostle: An ally the Spirit hovers gains +1 AC and advantage on saving throws against spells and their effects.
- Aegis Assailant: An ally the Spirit hovers gains +1 to spell attack and damage, as well as weapon attacks and damage rolls.
The Spirit takes the shape of whatever you decide and lasts for 1 minute. Willpower Incarnate requires Concentration and follows the rules of Concentration.
Apostle and Assailant's bonuses are increased by 1 at 15th level and again at 18th level.
Willpower Adaptability
At 10th level, you have hardened your skills with your shield as well as your willpower, and have learned to combine them. When spending a Willpower Point, you may swap your shields as part of that action to signify your growth and adaptability.
In addition, when you spend a Willpower Point, add +1 to your AC for 1 minute, and gain +1 to your next melee attack and damage.
Force of Will
At 15th level, you may use 1 Willpower Point to increase you or an ally's ability check or saving throw within 30 ft of you equal to your Constitution Modifier. This can be done after the results of the roll are revealed. You can use this a number of times equal to your Constitution Modifier and recharges every short rest.
Guardian Angel
At 18th level, you gain complete mastery with your shields in conjunction with your mind. While using the effects of Shield Expertise, instead of choosing between one large shield and two regular shields, gain the benefits of both and equip two large shields. The shields give you a +4 bonus to your AC and deal 1d10 + Strength Modifier + Constitution Modifier. When using your bonus action to attack with your off-hand shield, ignore the two-weapon fighting rules. You also gain an additional Interception reaction. These shields are large enough to hide any medium, small, or tiny creature behind them.
In addition, twice per long rest, you become the embodiment of Spirit and Defense. Your body floats 5 ft. above the ground within a ghost-like body. This body grants you an additional 30 feet of movement and doesn't provoke opportunity attacks. When you make an attack or use your Interception reaction, allies within 30 ft. of you each gain the Aegis Apostle and Aegis Assailant effects for 3 minutes, without requiring concentration. If an ally within the 30 ft. range already has one of these benefits, they still gain the additional benefits from this ability.
