Base Class: Monk
A human man, disheveled and scarred, his muscles like steel cables beneath a torn dogi, practices forms beneath a freezing waterfall. The torrent parts across his body as it would a stone.
A Dwarven man strides shirtless through a melee, apparently oblivious to the rain of cudgel blows, broken bottles, and dagger blades that assails his body. Unscathed, he seizes the bandit leader in a bear hug and suplexes him through the floor.
A gnomish woman exploring a dungeon finds her path blocked by a large stone. As her fellow party members consult spell lists and retrieve tool belts, the woman inhales sharply, and with a resounding ''KIAI!" reduces the boulder to rubble.
Monks of the Way of the Closed Fist believe that it is possible to forge the body to endure any hardship and destroy any obstacle. They forgo the emphasis many styles place on mobility, evasion, and rapid-fire flurries in favor of training which hardens their fists and bodies, allowing them to withstand blows and return them with incredible force. Closed fist monks subscribe thoroughly to the principle of ''Ikken Hissatsu'' ("one hit, one kill") and seek to end battles in a single strike whenever possible.
While often stereotyped as blunt, violent, single-minded, or even rude by other martial styles; Closed-Fist monks can vary widely in personality, and the terrifying power conveyed by the style is so difficult to restrain in battle that it often inspires practitioners to avoid unnecessary conflict at all costs.
Closed Fist Technique
When you begin this path at 3rd level, your blows land with vicious accuracy and weight. Whenever you hit a creature with a regular attack action (not an attack granted by your Flurry of Blows), you can impose one of the following effects on that target:
- It must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be knocked prone.
- It must succeed on a Strength saving throw. If it fails, it flies back up to 15 feet away from you (though you can choose not to push it the whole distance if you want).
- It must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw, or drop any weapon it may be holding (creatures wielding two weapons may make two saving throws, one for each weapon).
Ikken Hissatsu
Instead of using a flurry of blows, you may add a single die of damage to your strike for every attack granted by your flurry. For instance, at 3rd level, a monk may spend 1 ki point to make two bonus strikes, dealing 1d4 damage plus their strength or dexterity modifiers. With this ability, the monk would spend 1 ki point to instead make a single normal attack, which would deal 3d4 damage plus their strength or dexterity. The monk may do this once for each normal attack.
At higher levels: At the 6th, 9th, 12th, 15th, and 20th level, the Closed Fist Monk may add one additional ki point to gain one additional die of damage per point. For instance: At 6th level, a Closed Fist Monk can spend 2 ki points to add 3d6 to their damage, at 9th they can spend a total of 4 ki points to add 5d6 to their damage, at 12th they can spend 5 ki points to add 6d8 to their attack, at 15th they can spend 6 ki points to add 7d8, and at 20th level they can spend 7 ki points to add 8d10 to their damage.
Body of Iron
At 6th level, closed-fist monks learn to channel their ki to harden their bodies like unto a thing of iron. As a reaction, you can spend one ki point to reduce damage from any melee bludgeoning strike as per your deflect missiles ability, but reducing the damage by 1d10+ your strength modifier+ your monk level (however, you may not make an attack in response, even if you reduce the incoming damage to 0).
At higher levels: As the closed-fist monk trains, they learn to inure themselves to more forms of damage. At levels 9, 12, 15, and 18, the closed-fist monk gains the ability to reduce damage from the following damage types:
9th: Slashing, piercing.
12th: Fire, cold.
15th: Force, acid.
18th: Any damage source.
Iron Will
Beginning at 15th level, once per long rest. You may designate a single target in combat. The target must succeed on a wisdom saving throw (DC= 8+your proficiency bonus + your wisdom modifier) or be paralyzed with fear. On your next attack against this target, you have advantage. Until you successfully strike the target, all attacks made against you (including attacks of opportunity) are at disadvantage, and you gain advantage on any saves made against fear or paralysis effects during this time. Creatures or constructs which are immune to fear are unaffected by this ability.
At Higher Levels: At 20th level, you may use this ability to simultaneously strike fear into all enemies who can see you. Though doing so still requires a long rest between uses.
Shattering Fist
At 17th level, the Closed Fist Monk attains such focus that they are able to weaponize their own voice. The Closed Fist Monk gains the ability to spend 3 ki points to cast Shatter (DC= 8+ Proficiency Bonus+ Wisdom Modifier). The monk may also choose to spend additional ki points to increase the level of the spell, up to 9th, where each additional ki point spent increases the spell's level by 1.
