Artificer
Base Class: Artificer

In the mystical realms far and wide, where the clash of steel and the crackle of arcane energy echo through the ages, the Firearm Engineer emerges as a pioneer at the intersection of magic and technology. Born from a desire to redefine warfare and harness the power of firearms, these intrepid individuals combine their innate magical talents with a keen understanding of mechanics.

The Firearm Engineer's journey often begins in a bustling workshop or an arcane laboratory, where the clinking of tools and the scent of gunpowder mingle. Fueled by an insatiable curiosity, these artificers seek to push the boundaries of conventional weaponry. Their fascination with firearms leads them to ancient tomes and hidden knowledge, uncovering forgotten techniques that meld magic and ballistics.

As the Firearm Engineer hones their craft, they become adept at infusing mystical energies into their creations. Through diligent study and experimentation, they unlock the secrets of modifying and enhancing firearms, turning them into formidable instruments of war. Their reputation spreads across the lands, drawing the attention of fellow adventurers, military leaders, and arcane scholars intrigued by the marriage of tradition and innovation.

Firearm Engineers are often associated with inventors' guilds, academies of artificers, or secret societies dedicated to advancing magical technology. Some may have stumbled upon ancient blueprints, revealing forgotten techniques from a bygone era. Others might have received divine inspiration, bestowed with the knowledge to reshape the battlefield with their unique blend of magic and firearms.

Regardless of their origins, Firearm Engineers stand as pioneers, weaving a new chapter in the tapestry of the realms. Their creations alter the balance of power, introducing a fusion of old-world charm and cutting-edge weaponry to a world accustomed to more traditional forms of combat. As the Firearm Engineer strides into battle, their arsenal of modified firearms and conjured modern weaponry becomes a testament to their innovation, forever altering the landscape of mythical warfare.

Firearm Craftsmanship

Firearm Crafting: Starting at 3rd level, you can craft firearms during a long rest, provided you have access to your Tinker's Tools and appropriate materials. You can craft a number of firearms equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of 1). These firearms are non-magical but can be enhanced using your infusions.

Modify Firearm: At 3rd level, you gain the ability to modify your firearms. During a long rest, you can choose one firearm you are holding or that isn't being worn or carried by another creature. You can apply one of the following modifications:

  • Precision Barrel: Increase the range of the firearm by 30 feet.
  • Impact Hammer: Increase the damage die of the firearm by one step (e.g., d4 becomes d6, d6 becomes d8).
  • Elemental Infusion: Choose a damage type (fire, cold, lightning, or thunder). The firearm deals that type of damage until you finish a long rest.
  • Versatile Frame: Allow the firearm to be wielded with one hand without imposing disadvantage on attack rolls.

You can apply a modification once per long rest.

Infuse Firearms

Infuse Firearm: At 5th level you learn 3 additional infusions that you can apply to your firearms.

  • Homing Ammunition: You can infuse your ammo with the same magic wizards use for Magic Missile by taking a penalty to the damage die. You decrease the damage die by one step and in doing so you no longer need to make an attack roll with the weapon. (It operates like Magic Missile, with only 1 projectile unless another feature gives it multiple projectiles)
  • Penetrator Shells: You harden your ammunition with magic, causing it to pierce through even the toughest of shells. For the first shot you take, you gain an additional + modifier to the attack roll equal to your Spellcasting Ability Modifier. If it is already added to the roll, double it.
  • Touch Loaded Shells: You infuse a touch spell into the ammunition that will release the effects of the touch spell as if you were touching the target that is hit with the infused ammunition.

Extra Attack

Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.

The number of attacks increases to three when you reach 11th level in this class and to four when you reach 20th level in this class.

Veteran Modifications

At 9th level, your expertise in firearm engineering expands, allowing you to create even more advanced modifications for your firearms. During a long rest, you can choose one firearm you are holding or that isn't being worn or carried by another creature. You can apply one of the following advanced modifications:

  • High-Caliber Barrel: The firearm gains an additional damage die, dealing additional damage on a hit. Additionally, once per turn, when you score a critical hit with the firearm, you can expend a bonus action to make an additional attack.

  • Arcane Amplifier: The firearm becomes infused with additional arcane energy. Once per turn, when you deal damage with the firearm, you can choose to add 1d6 force damage to the total. Additionally, you can expend a bonus action to make an additional attack with the same firearm against a different target.

  • Rapid Repeater Mechanism: The firearm gains the ability to unleash a rapid barrage of shots. Once per turn, when you make an attack with the firearm, you can choose to make an additional attack with the same firearm against a different target, or the same target. Additionally, you can expend a bonus action to make another attack with the same firearm against a target that you haven't hit with an attack.

You can apply an advanced modification once per long rest. These advanced modifications showcase your mastery of combining magic and technology, providing you with versatile options in combat. Choose the modification that best suits your tactical needs and watch as your firearms become even deadlier on the battlefield.

Perfected Weaponsmithing

Perfected Weapon Modifications: At 15th level, your mastery over firearm engineering reaches its zenith, allowing you to craft perfected modifications for your weapons. During a long rest, you can choose up to three perfected modifications to apply to a single firearm you are holding or that isn't being worn or carried by another creature. These perfected modifications represent the pinnacle of your skill, offering powerful enhancements to your chosen weapon. You can choose from the following perfected modifications:

  • Precision Fury: The firearm gains an increased damage die, dealing additional damage on a hit. Additionally, when you score a critical hit with the firearm, you can choose to roll an additional damage die for the critical hit.

  • Arcane Annihilation: The firearm becomes infused with potent arcane energy. Once per turn, when you deal damage with the firearm, you can choose to add 1d8 force damage to the total. Additionally, the firearm's attacks are considered magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to non-magical attacks.

  • Rapid Devastation: The firearm gains the ability to unleash a devastating flurry of shots. Once per turn, when you make an attack with the firearm, you can choose to make an additional attack with the same firearm against the same target. Additionally, you can expend a bonus action to make another attack with the same firearm against the same target.

You can apply up to three perfected modifications to a single firearm during a long rest. The firearm becomes a true masterpiece of your craft, embodying the culmination of your expertise. Moreover, you can have a total of three modifications from any that you know, including the perfected ones, on each firearm. This flexibility allows you to wield a collection of deadly, customized weapons on the battlefield.
