Base Class: Monk
An adept of the Way of the Lightning Warrior uses both the static energy around us and the full fury of lightning: from electrified punches to a minor spell like Shocking Grasp to Call Lightning in its apocalyptic glory.
Shocking Blows
At third level, a monk following this tradition gains the use of something like the Shocking Grasp cantrip. Each blow they land does an additional 1d8 of lightning damage. If the attacker further spends one Ki point the target must make a DC 13 CON saving throw or be stunned.
Attacks made against opponents in metal armor are rolled with Advantage.
The damage for this ability scales to 2d8 at level 6, 3d8 at level 11, and 4d8 at level 17. The DC for the saving throws of the stun effect scale to 15 at level 6, 17 at level 11, and 19 at level 17.
Thrown Lightning/Ranged Blows
At 6th level, any ranged attack you make can behave like the Lightning Arrow spell by spending 2 Ki points. The effect doesn't change the weapon's stats but the ammunition or thrown weapon does an additional 4d8 lightning damage on a hit and half as much damage on a miss.
Hit or miss, each creature within 10 feet of the target takes 2d8 lightning damage or half damage on a successful DEX saving throw.
At level 11, three Ki points can be spent to increase the damage to 6d8 and, at level 17, four Ki points can be spent to raise the damage dice to 8d8.
Additionally, at this level, your Shocking Blows gain increased range to 10 feet as you learn to more powerfully discharge the static in an electrical arc. The range increases to 15 feet at level 11 and 20 feet at level 17.
Lightning Bolt
At level 11 you can expel a lightning bolt from your hands for 2 Ki points. This bolt is in a line 100 ft long by 5 ft wide. Any creature in its path takes 8d6 lightning damage or half damage on a successful DEX saving throws. With each additional Ki points spent, an additional 2d6 is added to the damage.
Lightning Palm/Chain Lightning
At 17th level, you gain the ability to set up lethal electrical currents in someone’s body. When you hit a creature with an unarmed strike, you can spend 3 ki points to start these imperceptible currents which last for a number of days equal to your monk level. The currents are harmless unless you use your action to end them. To do so, you and the target must be on the same plane of existence. When you use this action, the creature must make a Constitution saving throw. If it fails, it is reduced to 0 hit points. If it succeeds, it takes 10d10 lightning damage.
You can have only one creature under the effect of this feature at a time. You can choose to end the currents harmlessly without using an action.
Additionally, at 17th level and for three Ki points, you can hurl bolts of Chain Lightning that behave exactly as the 6th level evocation spell doing 10d8 lightning damage or half as much on a successful DEX saving throw. For one additional Ki point spent, that damage goes to 12d8 and for two points 14d8. These bolts also increase from three to four and five by spending the additional Ki points.
