Base Class: Fighter
The defender is a sponsored champion of a dwarven cause, a dwarven aristocrat, a dwarven deity, or the dwarven way of life. As the name might imply, this character is a skilled combatant trained in the arts of defense. A line of dwarven defenders is a far better defense than a 10-foot-thick wall of stone, and much more dangerous.
RESTRICTION: Dwarves only.
This subclass is heavily associated with Dwarves and their culture. At the DM's discretion, this restriction can be lifted.
Defensive Stance
Starting at 3rd level, you can adopt an immovable defensive stance in combat, allowing you to steel yourself in the face of any physical or mental blow. You may activate your defensive stance for one minute as a bonus action, as long as you are wearing medium or heavy armour. While in the stance, you gain a +2 bonus to your AC, all saving throws, and melee weapon attack damage. Additionally while in this stance, your movement speed is reduced by 10ft, creatures do not benefit from flanking you, and you cannot be knocked prone or physically moved through any means short of teleportation or gravity. The stance ends after one minute, if you use a bonus action to end it, or if you are reduced to 0 hitpoints. After using this feature, you cannot use it again until you take a short or long rest.
You also gain an additional use of your second wind feature, which can only be used once per long rest.
Defensive Awareness
By 7th level, your rigorous Dwarven training has taught you to remain ever vigilant against even hidden threats. You become proficient in either Wisdom (perception) or Intelligence (investigation) checks (your choice), and you have advantage on skill checks to detect traps, hidden creatures, and invisible creatures. Additionally, other creatures don't gain advantage on attack rolls against you as a result of being unseen by you.
Improved Defensive Stance
At 10th level, your defensive stance allows you to shield your allies from harm. Whenever a creature within 15ft of you takes damage while you are in your defensive stance, you may use your reaction to move up to your walking speed towards the creature. If you end up within 5ft of the creature, you may choose to reduce the damage taken by any amount. You then take damage equal to the amount you reduced minus your constitution modifier. The damage you take from this feature cannot be reduced in any other way.
Additionally, the bonus to your AC, Saving Throws, and Melee weapon attack damage granted by your defensive stance feature increase to +3.
Dwarven Bulwark
Starting at 15th level, you are capable of turning the tides of battle in an instant. Upon activating your defensive stance, creatures of your choice within 30ft of you gain advantage on attack rolls until the beginning of your next turn, and gain temporary hitpoints equal to your level.
Additionally, you gain another use of your defensive stance feature, which can be used once per long rest.
Stout Juggernaut
At 18th level, your stout nature combined with your rigid training has produced a fearsome warrior. Whenever you are reduced to 0 hitpoints, make a constitution (DC 10) saving throw. If you succeed, you return to one hitpoint, your defensive stance doesn't end, and you may use your second wind feature instantaneously if you have any uses of the feature available. Every time you succeed on this saving throw, the DC increases by 5 until you take a long rest.
Additionally, the bonus to your AC, saving throws, and melee weapon attack damage from your defensive stance feature increases to +4.
