Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

The Paladins of the Oath of the Gourmet know one thing, deep in their bones: good food can change the world. Whether seasoning their signature beef stew over a campfire or seeking the finest pear risotto in the kingdom, followers of this oath seek to either find or make good food wherever they go—and to share their love of a proper meal with everyone else.

TENETS OF THE GOURMET

Generosity. The wholesome goodness of a well-cooked meal tastes best shared with friends. Spread the wealth to those in need, whether it be a few coins, a warm meal, or a blessing. Give generously, but remember to save a slice for you—you deserve to gift yourself, sometimes.

Laughter. Nothing brings a smile like a fresh batch of cookies. Joy and positivity are beautiful emotions, and to be celebrated—strive to inspire them in others whenever possible. Smile, laugh, and be merry—and if you can’t, then find something to help yourself, so you can spread it to others again.

Kindness. The purpose of the chef is to cook, but the purpose of a meal is to feed the hungry. Smiles and free samples go a long way, but the core reason for it all should always be to ease the hardship of suffering, no matter how small the ache. Be kind to others, and also to yourself.

Spellcasting

As a paladin of the Oath of the Gourmet, your finely honed senses and wealth of experiential knowledge are essential to you--so much so that even the nature of your spells changes to reflect it. Rather than Charisma, you use Wisdom as your spellcasting ability, flavoring the power of your connection to the divine with your experiences of the world and your desire to spread that power to those within it, rather than simply acting as a conduit for divine influence. Through you, perhaps even the gods may sample the joyous sensations of a well-cooked meal.

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity Options.

Enticing Aroma. You can use your Channel Divinity to amplify the delicious scent of food, causing your enemies to waver in their hostilities in the face of such temptation. As an action, you hold up an item of food or drink and cause its smell to spread through the nearby area (you can retrieve an item of food or drink from a container as part of this action). Each hostile creature within 30 feet of you that isn’t a construct or undead must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature becomes charmed by you for 1 minute, and uses its movement to move closer to you if possible. If you or an ally of yours damages the creature or performs any hostile action to it, the effect ends on that creature.

Developed Palate. You can use your Channel Divinity to instill yourself with vigor from the delectable flavors of food. As an action, you consume an item of food or drink small enough to be eaten or drunk in six seconds (you can retrieve an item of food or drink from a container as part of this action). You gain temporary hit points equal to your Paladin level plus twice your Proficiency Bonus, which last for the next minute.

Chef's Choice

Starting at 3rd level, you can imbue food with divine potency, allowing whoever consumes it to benefit from its consumption. As an action, you can imbue up to 1 pound of nonmagical food or 1/4 of a gallon of nonmagical drink with divine magic. Food or drink blessed in this way remains both blessed and edible for the next week, even if it would otherwise spoil. A creature can consume blessed food or drink to gain a benefit, depending on the type of blessing you bestowed on it. However, only one creature can gain the benefit from a single blessing; other creatures partaking of the same food or drink gain no benefits from the blessing, and the benefit is granted when a creature first starts to consume the food or drink—consuming more of it later will not grant the same benefit again.

When you use this feature, choose one of the following blessings to bestow on the food:

Lay on Hands. You can spend a number of hit points from the pool granted to you by your Lay on Hands feature, up to five times your proficiency bonus. When a creature consumes the blessed food, they regain the hit points you spent in this way.

You can bless a number of items this way equal to your Paladin level.

Divine Smite. You can spend a spell slot of up to 3rd level. When a creature consumes the blessed food, the first time they hit a creature with a melee weapon attack during the next 10 minutes, that attack deals an extra 1d8 radiant damage for each level of the spell slot you spent.

You can only have one instance of this blessing active on food at a time; if you use this blessing again, the previous Divine Smite blessing fades.

When you reach 9th level, you gain an additional form of blessing:

Divine Grace. You can cast one 1st-level spell with a casting time of 1 action whose target is Self or Touch, or which has only one target. When a creature eats the blessed food, that creature casts the spell using your spellcasting ability modifier, targeting themselves. If the spell requires concentration, the creature must concentrate. You can bless food with 2nd-level spells when you reach 13th level, and 3rd-level spells when you reach 17th level.

You can have a number of items blessed in this way up to half your Wisdom modifier, rounded up (minimum of 1).

Aura of the Food Lover

Beginning at 7th level, your love of cuisine has grown so strong it now radiates from you, stirring the same feeling in nearby allies. Friendly creatures within 10 feet of you can consume food and drink items as a free object interaction. Additionally, when you use your Developed Palate Channel Divinity, friendly creatures within 10 feet gain a number of temporary hit points equal to to your Proficiency Bonus.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Savor the Flavor

Starting at 15th level, whenever a friendly creature within 60 feet of you regains hit points from a spell, class feature, or food or drink item, including one you’ve blessed, that creature also gains temporary hit points equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of 1). Additionally, your Enticing Aroma Channel Divinity can now affect even undead, and non-undead creatures have disadvantage on the saving throw.

Culinary Savant

At 20th level, you can channel the might of the most renowned of chefs and food critics alike, becoming the embodiment of the power of cuisine. For the next minute, you gain the following benefits:

  • Hostile creatures within 30 feet of you suffer a penalty to weapon attack rolls equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum penalty of 1), as your pure scorn at them for preventing you from properly taking your time to savor a dish unsettles them deeply.

  • Whenever a hostile creature misses you with a spell attack roll or you succeed a saving throw against a spell that targets you, you can use your reaction to consume the residual magic near you. If you do, you gain advantage on the next weapon or spell attack roll you make during your next turn, and hostile creatures have disadvantage on the next saving throw you force them to make. This effect can only apply to one attack roll or forced saving throw, whichever happens first.

  • When you consume a food or drink item on your turn, you can use your bonus action to describe its flavors and textures, either praising its flavor and texture or criticizing the same. If you praise it, friendly creatures within 60 feet of you that can hear you get +1 to all attack rolls and skill checks they make during their next turn. If you criticize it, hostile creatures within 60 feet of you that can hear you get -1 to all saving throws and skill checks they make before the start of your next turn.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
