Base Class: Fighter
An armored elf scans the crowd, his sharp eyes quickly identifying the would-be assassin slinking closer to his target. A burly dwarf dives in front of an axe-swinging goblin, taking the blow intended for his friend on a sturdy shield. An elven shield maid kneels over the young prince she has guarded from birth, quickly administering medicine. Bodyguards are masters of protection, whether for a single person or on the front lines of a battlefield. Living shields, they rely on lightning-fast reflexes and physical toughness to keep their charges from harm.
Note: this is mostly a tweaked version of the Bodyguard class presented by Aron K on Zurn Central.
Living Shield
At level 3, you gain an extra reaction. Whenever an enemy makes a melee attack against an ally within 5 feet of you, you can use your reaction to intercept the blow. The attack is now made against your AC and you will take the damage if it hits. This reaction must be taken before the attackers roll to hit.
Bonded Ward
Optional: Starting at level 3, you may choose one willing ally with whom you have been in at least one encounter. After training and fighting together, you and your ally have developed a close bond, communicating effortlessly in social situations and in combat. As long as you are in sight of one another, you and this ally can exchange simple messages nonverbally, such as "come here," "I am ready to leave" or "this person is dangerous." In combat, if you end your move next to this ally the two of you can switch places without provoking any opportunity attacks.
Seasoned Guardian
At level 7, your experience in the field has paid off. You now have a distinctive style as a bodyguard: quiet and watchful, or brusque and intimidating. Additionally, you have learned to apply quick field dressings to your charges' wounds. You gain proficiency in either the Perception or Intimidate skills (gaining expertise if you are already proficient) and you can now use your Second Wind to heal your allies instead of yourself.
Intimidating
You gain proficiency in the Intimidate skill
Watchful
You gain proficiency in the Perception skill
Parry Master
At level 10 you gain a 3rd reaction. If you are using a shield, you gain a +1 to AC when using Living Shield. If you are dual wielding weapons, you can now parry for an adjacent ally when a melee attack is made against them. If you are wielding a two-handed weapon, you can use a bonus action to fend off melee attacks, granting disadvantage to melee attacks against you and allies within 5 feet of you until your next turn.
Mobile Defender
Starting at 15th Level, you may use your reaction to perform a movement action up to your movement distance. To perform this reaction you must move within 5 feet of an ally who is being attacked. If you end your movement within 5 feet of the ally you may use any of the abilities from the Parry Master trait above. This movement still provokes opportunity attacks from opponents within range of you for the entirety of your movement.
Bulwark
Starting at 18th Level, you gain a fourth reaction each turn. You also gain proficiency with the Athletics skill (or expertise if you already have proficiency with the Athletics skill), and gain advantage on all Grapple checks (both to grapple and avoid being grappled)
