Base Class: Rogue
If you've ever heard the saying "fake it 'til you make it," you have heard the motto of the Arcane Charlatan. These rogues have employed their bluffing, deception, and misdirection to such extent while feigning spellcasting ability that they have managed to actually gain real spellcasting capacity. Through mimicry and showboating antics, these magic users have stumbled upon the means of calling upon magics similar to those used by arcane casters, and have even learned to improvise further magical tricks. Nowhere near as capable in magic as those who are truly gifted or who have studied and practiced their arts, these individuals have just enough spark of magical ability to fake their way into convincing others of their power, and know just enough spellcraft to be a little more convincing.
Spellcasting
When you reach 3rd level, you gain the ability to cast spells from the Bard spell list, learning new spells as you increase in level.
Cantrips
You gain Three bard cantrips of your choosing upon gaining this subclass, and an additional cantrip of your choosing at 10th level.
Spell Slots
The Arcane Charlatan Spellcasting table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your wizard spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.
For example, if you know the 1st-level spell charm person and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast charm person using either slot.
Spells Known of 1st-Level and Higher
You know three 1st-level bard spells of your choice.
The Spells Known column of the Arcane Charlatan Spellcasting table shows when you learn more bard spells of 1st level or higher.
Whenever you gain a level in this class, you can replace one of the bard spells you know with another spell of your choice from the bard spell list. The new spell must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
Spellcasting Ability
Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your bard spells, since you learn your spells through improvisation and mimicry of true spellcasters. You use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Charisma modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a bard spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.
Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier

Arcane Copycat
Starting at 3rd level, you gain the ability to copy spells you see being cast. Any time you witness a Bard, Sorcerer, or Wizard spell being cast, you may use your reaction and expend one use of Arcane Copycat to mimic the motions and identify the energies of the spell. After you do this, you gain the ability to cast that spell as though you know it for the next 24 hours. Casting a spell gained by Arcane Copycat requires any spellcasting components, actions, and spell slots the spell would normally consume, and is cast using your Charisma. Thus, if you use Arcane Copycat on a spell that you do not possess spell slots of an appropriate level to cast, you will not be able to cast that spell, even though you know how to for 24 hours. After 24 hours have passed, you lose access to the copied spell unless you expend an additional use of Arcane Copycat to retain it for another 24 hours.
You may use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all uses of it upon completing a long rest.
Sleight of Spellcasting
Starting at 9th level, you have become incredibly well versed in subversive and subtle usage of magics, allowing you to employ your magics in far more stealthy and sly ways. You gain the following benefits:
- Casting spells that do not emit light, sound, or otherwise have an easily detectable effect that emanates from you do not cause you disadvantage nor penalties on Dexterity (Stealth) checks, even if they employ verbal components.
- You can cast spells that require somatic components without revealing the gestures you use, and may do so even while grappled, restrained, or while holding items in both hands. However, if you are completely bound in such a way as to prevent even your fingers from moving, you may still be prevented from casting spells that require somatic components.
Improvisational Materials
At 13th level, you gain enough insight into the mystical arts you have been employing to realize that which materials used in spellcasting don't matter nearly as much as what those materials do to make the magic easier to use, aim, or control. Any time you cast a spell that requires specific material components, you can improvise materials that accomplish the same tasks or have the same relative gold cost in order to cast the spell.
For example, a spell that calls for sulfur that is burned could instead be cast using a handful of gunpowder (which contains sulfur), a brick of charcoal (which burns like sulfur), or a rotten egg (which smells like sulfur), depending on whether it is the burning (like for burning hands), the chemical aspect of sulfur (like for acid splash), or the odor (like for stinking cloud) that the spell would be employing.
Gemstones of comparable cost can replace other gems of equal or lower value, so a diamond worth 500gp could be used in place of an onyx worth 500gp or less.
All other items must serve a comparable role or have comparable value.
Signature Tricks
At 17th level, you have become so accustomed to using and copying certain spells that you can do so on demand. Choose a 1st level spell from the Bard, Sorcerer, or Wizard spell list. You may now cast this spell as a 1st level spell a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all uses of the spell upon completing a long rest.
Select an additional 1st level spell at 18th, 19th, and 20th level, gaining the ability to cast each of these spells in this way at the corresponding levels.
Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells, and you may cast them using your spell slots, normally, including at levels above 1st.
