Base Class: Fighter
You have been blessed with two ancient relics, a Shardblade and Shardplate. How did you come to possess these items? Are you the offspring of a warrior king, and this is your birthright? Has it been passed down through inheritance, and fallen to you? Are you a military leader, and this is proof of your station? Or perhaps you simply killed the previous owner and took them for yourself. Whatever the case, they have fallen into your hands, to do with as you please.
Shards
You receive two magic items at 3rd level: A Shardblade and Shardplate. The details for these items can be found below. Both items receive additional benefits as you level up in this class. Any creature can attune to these items as long as they are proficient.
Shardblade
An extremely powerful and ancient weapon wielded by holy warriors thousands of years ago. The method of their creation has been lost to time. The shardblade does not cause physical injuries to living creatures. Instead, the blade passes through their bodies, cutting their soul and leaving the effect of the injury (for example, if the blade cuts through a creature's wrist, that hand will become inert as if it had been cut off, however the creature will show no injury). Creatures killed with the blade have their soul severed, their eyes burning out and leaving hollow sockets.
+1 Shortsword, Longsword, Greatsword, Rapier, or Scimitar (requires attunement) (you choose the weapon type when gaining this feature. It cannot be changed later).
Bonded Blade: Upon attuning to the Shardblade, it disappears. The user can summon the Blade to their hand using a bonus action. It disappears again when dropped, thrown or when the user falls unconscious.
Shardplate
Ancient armor used by holy warriors thousands of years ago. Runic magic enhances the wearer’s martial prowess. The method of its creation has been lost to time.
+1 Plate Armor (requires attunement)
Superhuman Ability: While wearing Shardplate, the user has advantage on athletics and acrobatics checks. Additionally, their carrying capacity is calculated as if they were a creature one size larger.
Gauntlet Strike: The wearer’s unarmed attack becomes magical, and deals an additional 1d6 force damage on hit. This damage increases to 2d6 at 10th level, and 3d6 at 18th level.
Damaged: When the wearer falls below one quarter of their maximum hit points, the Shardplate becomes damaged, losing all magical abilities. The Shardplate magically repairs itself during a long rest.
Sever the Soul
At 7th level, you learn how to draw incredible power out of your Shardblade. The Shardblade gains the following ability:
Sever the Soul: Once per turn upon hitting an attack with the Shardblade, it deals additional radiant damage in the form of a number of d6s equal to half your level, rounded down (minimum 1d6)
Powerful Strides
At 10th level, the magic in your Shardplate has become more potent. It gains the following ability:
Powerful Strides: the wearer's movement speed increases by 10 feet.
Adept Shardbearer
At 15th level, you have become skilled enough to draw significant power from the Shards. They gain the following benefits:
Enhanced Enchantment: The enchantment level for both the Shardblade and Shardplate becomes +2.
Enhanced Bond: The Shardblade can now be summoned on the user’s turn using a free action.
Enhanced Resilience: The Shardplate now only becomes Damaged when the wearer falls to 0 hit points.
Awakened Shardbearer
At 18th level, you have drawn out all of the latent power of the Shards and they have become awakened. They gain the following benefits:
Awakened Enchantment: The enchantment level for both the Shardblade and Shardplate becomes +3.
Rend the Soul: the damage dice from the Sever the Soul feature become d8s.
Superior Defenses: Awakened Shardplate grants the wearer resistance to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks.
