Monk
Base Class: Monk

Monks of the Way of the Waterbender learn to manipulate the elemental force of water to their will, bending it and further exploring how this element can be used. Waterbenders are often seen wandering, using their water magic to rejuvinate others in need, or to bring a swift end to their enemies.

Those who follow the Way of Waterbending often feel drawn to the sea or other bodies of water, and live on the principles of exploration and learning through practice. The first Waterbenders learned how to control water by studying the moon and how it affected the tides. More experienced Waterbenders have learned to communicate with each other and primordial beings, by sending vague messages as ripples through water over long distances. Some might be gentle traveling healers, helping people from town to town, while others might use their powers to become bringers of destruction.

Waterbenders are often seen having wave patterned tattoos on their arms, symbolizing their membership and comitment to their element.

Waterbending

When you reach 3rd level, you gain the abillity to bend the elemental force of water granting you the following features:

You learn how to speak and write Aquan. In addition you gain proficiency in the medicine skill.

You gain the Shape Water cantrip. When using this cantrip the area of water you can affect is a 10 feet cube instead of a 5 feet cube for you. For you this cantrip also works for the purpose of moving, melting, animating or changing the color of snow and ice.

Waterbender Spells

You know four 1st-level waterbender spells of your choice from the Waterbender Spell List.

The Spells Known column of the Waterbender Spellcasting table shows when you learn more waterbender spells of 1st level or higher. You cannot learn a spell higher than your current max spell level. For instance, when you reach 5th level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level.

Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the waterbender spells you know and replace it with another spell from the waterbender spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.

Ki Fueled Spellcasting

By the time you reach 3rd level, you have learned to use the mystical essence of the water element to cast spells. See Spells Rules for the general rules of spellcasting. In addition, you ignore any material components required for the casting of your Waterbender spells, unless the spell requires a material component with a gold cost. Using ki points to cast a spell as an action also works with the optional monk class feature Ki-Fueled Attack.

Spell Slots

Instead of using spell slots to cast spells you use your ki points to fuel the casting of your spells. When casting a spell, the ki point cost of the spell is equal to the spells level. You can cast any spell at a higher level using 1 extra ki point for each higher level upcast, however you cannot cast a spell at a higher level than the highest level spell you currently know.

Spellcasting Ability

Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for your Waterbender spells, since your magic draws on your attunement to the primordial element of water. You use your Wisdom modifier whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for any Waterbender spell you cast and when making a spell attack roll.

Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier

Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier

Redirecting Flow

Starting at 6th level, you have mastered a defensive technique that allows you to deflect any type of attack against you. You can use your Deflect Missiles feature when you are hit by any ranged or melee attack, including spell attacks. Ranged spell attacks are treated the same way you whould normally treat a missile with the Deflect Missiles feature. When you reduce a melee attack's damage to 0, you can redirect it against another creature than the attacker, within 5 feet of you, and spend the 1 Ki point cost like usual.

Pool of Tidal Energy

Also at 6th level you gain a Pool of Tidal Energy called Tidal Points, you can draw your energy from this pool to fuel your spellcasting instead of using ki points. You gain a number of Tidal Points equal to your proficiency modifier per long rest. Tidal Points can only be used to cast spells and does not work on other monk features.

Fury of the Torrent

Beginning at 11th level you learn how to cast spells in tandem with your Ki features. When you spend your action to cast a Waterbender spell of 1st level or higher, you can immediately use either flurry of blows, patient defence or step of the wind as a bonus action, and without spending a Ki point for that feature.

One with the Water

At 17th level you have truly learned to master the art of waterbending. Your physical apperance changes as your arms become engulfed in a moving blue wave patterned tattoo, and you can choose to make your eyes glow in a mystical blue color at will. You have mastered the true power of bending the elemental force of water to your will and using it in tandem with your martial arts techniques. You gain the following benefits:

  • When you make an unarmed attack on your turn you can immediately make another unarmed attack (no action required) once on your turn.
  • You ignore difficult terrain.
  • Your movement speed cannot be lowered.
  • You cannot be grappled or restrained.

Wave of Destruction. You can cast Tsunami at 8th level using 6 ki points, with this feature. Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest. This spell does not otherwise count as a known spell for you.
