Base Class: Monk
Monks who follow the tradition of the Way of the Eternal Phoenix study the Great Phoenix, Rhiqirrk-Qoor, and the eternal Phoenix flame, a primordial fire on the world of Yoko, from which all fire was born. Those following the Way of the Eternal Phoenix dedicate themselves to the flame, learning how to rekindle its smoldering embers and how to channel their ki to mold fire to their will and imbue their bodies with the blessings of the Great Phoenix. These monks are usually referred to as "Fire Priests" or "Flame Kindlers".
Rhiqirrk-Qoor was once a living sorcerer who used the power of the Phoenix flame to fuel his spell-casting. Rhiqirrk-Qoor was one of the last of his kind, as those born with the Phoenix Soul were hunted down due to their capabilities and raw strength. However, after his adventuring days with the Secret Seven, Rhiqirrk-Qoor allowed the Phoenix flame to ignite within him and he became an eternal Phoenix whose life essence refueled the Phoenix flame, keeping it burning for the next generation. Now, monks dedicated to tending to the flame are granted abilities by Rhiqirrk-Qoor in the hope that they can continue to stoke the fires of the Phoenix flame so that, one day, the Phoenix Soul can return to its primordial strength.
The Way of the Eternal Phoenix teaches its followers that fire is not just a fuel or a tool to harm others. The Phoenix flame burns within all of us and your body can become a vessel for its soothing warmth. If you bind your soul with the flame, fire can grant you strength, vitality and focus. Your ki can become the molten blood of the Great Phoenix himself.
Warmth of the Phoenix Flame
Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you have embraced the Phoenix flame and its warmth imbues your body and soul with gifts from the Great Phoenix. You are still training your body, mind and soul to accept the flame and its revitalizing properties. You gain the following benefits, due to your dedication to building your connection with the flame:
- You are resistant to fire damage.
- You gain access to the following cantrips: control flames and produce flame. These spells use your Ki save DC and your spell attack bonus is equal to your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier.
- At the start of your turn, you can choose to spend 1 ki point to have your unarmed strikes deal fire damage and increase their range to 10 feet this turn, as embers spray forth from your blows.
- Furthermore, whenever a creature takes fire damage from one of your unarmed strikes, ranged spell attacks or the area of effect of one of your spells, you gain temporary hit points equal to your Wisdom modifier.
Aspects of the Great Phoenix
Starting at 6th level, you dedication to this tradition has strengthened your bond to the Phoenix flame and your body is growing into a vessel for its primordial power. This means that your soul has been blessed by the Great Phoenix and aspects of his power have taken shape within you. You gain the following benefits:
- You gain a flying speed of 30 feet. If you already have a flying speed, it is doubled due to the benefits of this feature. Whenever you use your flying speed, fiery, amber, feathered wings sprout from your back, or, your existing wings take on this fiery, amber appearance. Your wings shed bright light for 10 feet and dim light for an additional 10 feet.
- Your soul, much like the Phoenix flame, is rekindled by your ki, lengthening your life. You now age half as much; every 2 years, you age 1 (your life expectancy doubles). This includes your physical appearance; your physical features now age half as quickly.
- You gain access to more spells, which still use your existing Ki save DC and spell attack bonus. You spend ki points to cast these higher leveled spells. Listed below are the spells you gain access to and the number of ki points required to cast them.
- feather fall, pyrotechnics, sleep: require 2 ki points to cast.
- continual flame, flame blade, scorching ray: require 3 ki points to cast.
- flame arrows, life transference: require 4 ki points to cast.
- Additionally, for you, using your action to make a melee spell attack using your flame blade spell counts as taking the attack action, meaning you can use your Flurry of Blows class feature with your bonus action. Your unarmed strikes from your Flurry of Blows feature deal fire damage if used in this way (without requiring you to spend a ki point as seen in your Warmth of the Phoenix Flame feature.
Eternal Guardian
Starting at 11th level, the Great Phoenix has recognised your continued dedication to studying the Way of the Eternal Phoenix and has chosen you as a champion of fire, watching over you as a primordial, immortal guardian. You gain the following benefits from your new elemental guardian:
- You are now immune to fire damage. Whenever you are the target of at least 10 fire damage from one source, you gain a number of hit points equal to your Wisdom modifier.
- Whenever you drop to 0 hit points and fall unconscious as a result of a creature dealing damage to you, you can, as a reaction, spend 1 ki point to cast hellish rebuke on that creature, a retaliation from your Eternal Guardian.
- So long as you are stood in bright light, you have advantage on Constitution saving throws.
Reborn from Ash
Upon reaching 17th level, you have become one with the Phoenix flame. You are a vessel for its primordial power, its warmth now blessing you with a fragment of the Great Phoenix's immortality. When you drop to 0 hit points, you can choose to fail all death saving throws and die. If you choose to do this, your body crumbles into a pile of ash, including everything you had on your person. Immediately, a 5 ft. wide, 10 ft. high blazing bonfire appears in an unoccupied space within 5 feet of your ashen remains and you emerge from the fires, reborn. You keep everything you had on your person, and you regain a number of hit points equal to 1d10 + your Wisdom modifier + 30. Furthermore, you regain 5 ki points and you are under the effects of the haste spell until the end of your next turn (you don't suffer the lethargic, detrimental effects that usually occur when the spell ends).
You must finish a long rest before you can use this feature again.
