Base Class: Monk
Monks of this tradition are adept wielders of all forms of weapons, and have honed their mind and body in ways that using weapons feels natural to them. Some of their weapons, they have trained with to a point that they are almost extensions of their own body.
Kensei's Path
When you choose this tradition at 3rd level, your training has lead to a mastery of certain weapons and tools, as well as an ability to use any weapon placed in your hands. You have the following benefits:
- Weapon Training: You gain proficiency with martial weapons
- Kensei Weapon: Choose one weapon, it becomes your kensei weapon. You can change your kensei weapon during a long rest with a different weapon in hand similar to attunement, or immediately by spending 3 ki points. At 8th level you can choose 2 weapons instead of 1 to be your kensei weapons.
- Masterful Training: You may pick one set of Artisan's Tools to become proficient in.
Kensei Skills
Also at 3rd level, while wielding one of your kensei weapons you gain the following benefits:
- Parry: After attacking with your kensei weapon, if you use your bonus action to make an unarmed strike, your AC increases by 1 until the start of your next turn, if you use your flurry of blows feature instead, this bonus increases to plus 2.
- Steady Hands: Directly before firing a ranged kensei weapon, you can use your bonus action to steady the attack, you can add 1 roll of your martial arts die to the attack roll or damage roll of the attack.
Improved Kensei Weapons
At 6th level, you become almost one with your kensei weapons, and while you wield them they have the following benefits:
- Magic Weapons: They become magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks.
- Quick Recovery: When you miss a creature with a kensei weapon, you can make 1 unarmed strike as a reaction.
- Connected by ki: You cannot be disarmed of your kensei weapons while you are conscious.
Enhance Weapons
Starting at 11th level, you have learned how to use your ki to enhance your weapons, as if they were extensions of your own body. Whenever you attack with a kensei weapon, you can spend up to 3 ki points to enhance the attack in different ways. You can only enhance a weapon this way once per turn. The ways you enhance it are as follows:
- 1 ki point: The damage type changes to force.
- 2 ki points: You can add your wisdom modifier to the attack roll and the damage type changes to force.
- 3 ki points: You can add your wisdom modifier to the attack roll, you can add 1 roll of your martial arts die to the damage, and the damage type changes to force.
Slayer
At 17th level, your mastery over your weapons allows you to use them to siphon the ki of those around you. While wielding a kensei weapon, if a creature within 10 feet of you dies, you immediately regain 3 ki points. If you slay the enemy directly, you regain 5 points. If you slay them with your kensei weapon, you regain 7 points. If you are wielding a ranged weapon and have hit the creature since or during your last turn, and you can see them. This also applies even if they are not within 10 feet of you.
